cedrus deodara aurea Golden Himalayan Cedar

Chehalis, WA

i live in western washington, our rainy season (3-4 months) is just beginning. i planted my tree in clayey soil amended with forest mulch. the tree was transplanted from a 5-gal pot, roots were tight and i loosened them and soaked them in water for an hour before planting it. i watered it slightly then and mulched it. it rained that night and is doing so each day. is this enough water for it for now, or should i give it more because it is newly (5 days ago) planted? it has pale green and golden needles. how will i know if it is getting too much water or not enough?.

If you back-filled the native soil with "amended" clay, you created the 'bathtub' effect. The planting hole will fill with water, and remain full of water until the water level in the surrounding clay percolates through the clay (if it doesn't perch) and gradually drops below the level of the planting hole.

If you're on a slope, you can minimize this effect by digging a trench that falls from the level of the bottom of the planting hole & filling the trench with coarse rock or gravel.
