These are popping up everywhere. The boys are picking them up and all are named "wormy"..do they bite and what are they?? They are a good size.
CLOSED: ??? I know his name isnt "wormy"
Going to add I think they are falling out of the huge Oak tree in the Backyard, theres one on top of my rabbit hutch.
Antheraea polyphemus??
Such adorable boys!
Antheraea sp. would be my guess, too. Are you keeping them?
No, where should I put them?? No way to put them back in the tree. I read about them a bit and its says they cocoon in tree leafs, but they are falling.
They just find random bugs in the yard and make bucket homes for them until I set them loose the next morning. I just havent seen these here before.
If you want to teach the boys what moth caterpillars do, put it in a large jar or box with some oak leaves, maybe a small branch. It may eat a bit more but looks big enough to spin it's cocoon. Here is one that I kept to see, but I lost interest on waiting for the moth to emerge and stapled the leaves back in the tree. I did however encounter a Polyphemus at my house.
Well the puppy ate one..bad dog. I got the other one in a leaf pile behind the shed, I hope to see some next summer :)
