Yesterday it was hiding inside the bushy growth in my garden. When it sensed my approach, it fluttered up, took two halts, one on the wall and one here. I could take one picture. It flew away. Which is this?
Is this a Common Crow butterfly? Not sure.
I am not sure either Dinu...it appears there is a slight variation in the outer wing pattern, but that may be due to a male/female difference or a seasonal difference. Overall it does look like a Common Crow. I think you might need a photo of the upper wing to confirm.
Not a common crow, but one of its apparent mimics - Hypolimnas bolina, known as the great eggfly - http://www.treknature.com/gallery/Asia/India/photo247326.htm
Flap what you know is amazing and you have great links. This will help me with Mexico IDs too and now i have it bookmarked.
Thanks Flap and vitrsna. On TrekNature [that link], I too have posted a few of my insect images under 'Dinu58' I think. Haven't visited or added to my old list there in some time.
This butterfly did not sit long enough to even to have a glimpse of the upper wing pattern. It flap-flap-doodled away, out of my compound as if I was wielding a gun!
