Is it time to move a small stewartia?

Stroudsburg, PA(Zone 6a)

I am in zone 6 and I'd love to go ahead and move a little tree because I have the time. However, the leaves have not turned yet and I'm thinking its a bit too soon. Would it be a major issue if I did it now? I'm very busy for the next few weeks actually, but I would fit it in somewhere if necessary.

One could provide recommendations in generalities, but it would be far more valuable to have a bit more information - and images would save thousands of words typed.

"A little tree" may mean very different things to different people. Little as in...how tall? Little as in...how thick is the trunk?

How long has it grown in the spot you are moving it from?

How did it get to this current spot? Did you plant it, or did it sprout on its own? If planted, was it a bare root plant? Container? Balled and burlapped?

Is the soil it is growing in finely prepared garden soil? Sandy? Loamy? Clayey?

Inquiring minds wish to know...

It's tiny. The trunk would be less than an inch and it's about 50in tall. I moved it from another spot and it has been in its current location about 3 years with no growth at all (I measure all my small trees every year). I'm guessing it is too sunny where it is. The hole has been dug in a partly sunny with afternoon shade location. The soil it's in is lovely and I am a very experienced gardener. This is the only tree I have ever moved and now this will be the third location. I am actually at a loss as to why it won't grow. I planted an acer griseum at the same time and approximately the same size and that is now nearly 12 feet tall. So since I have no idea what else to do, I will try to find a place for it to be happy.

I don't have any additional advice for you, if you are unable to provide anything more tactile or visual.

I don't see any reason you can't move it now.
Certainly doesn't sound like it's in 'active growth' mode...

Thanks both of you. I moved it. We shall see.
