FALL FOLIAGE AND BERRIES END OF SEASON PICS!!

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

Muddy, that Fothergilla is so pretty this time of year! I do not have a lot of sun in the garden for much red foliage except for the Kousa dogwood.

I have a very big Nellie Stevens Holly that has been in the garden for years without producing more than just a few dozen berries each year. I was told that it was supposed to be Self-Pollinating. Guess it will perform better if I plant a couple of more Holly bushes in the garden.

About the flower arrangement, an interesting thing I have just discovered is that the Anemone flowers actually make very good cut flowers although they look so delicate. No drooping branches or fallen petals so far.

Poor Gita! She has given her Monkshoods to several people. The plants all do well except for the ones in her own garden :o(.

donner--

Jeff will be the next one to prove that they DO good in everyone's garden than mine.

I gave him a bunch I dug up.

The place I have in mind to plant mine in NOW is right behind my
Bird bath where i dug up the clump of "Stinking Iris" for David.
Enough sun-soil--on the dry side--a split rail fence to lean on--if needed.

Gotta get to it this week sometimes....no more putting things off....

Gita

Here is the spot I have in mind for the Monkshoods. That is a Butterfly Bush
in the corned. It will be hard digging up the soil and amending it--as the
Stinking iris has been there forever. I will manage--even if i have to move
the BB forward a bit. This will be my last and NEW effort to see it it will like
THIS spot! Quite a bit different from all the cramped quarters it has been in.

Here is the pot of Monkshood pot I dug up.
They have been in this pot maybe??? 3 years now...
It IS trying to bloom! Lets wish it mush success in the new spot.
I will throw a lot of compost in the new area.

Donner, I have three male blue prince hollies planted near my 3 Nellie Stevens and we get a decent amount of berries. It might be worth getting a few blue princes.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

We cross posted G but the ones you gave me are blooming right now. I'll have to see how they do next year. The are planted under the drip line of our Dawn Redwood and will get mid-late afternoon sun.

Damascus, MD(Zone 7a)

Seq, thank you for the info. I will look out for prince hollies.

Gita, if those Monkshoods have been in that pot for 3 years, they are not blooming well probably because it is too crowded in the pot? Good luck with the next location. Their flowers are so striking! Would you like a white Anemone from my garden to plant with the Monkshoods? They bloom at about the same time.

Lucketts, VA(Zone 7a)

Gita, I am in the same boat as you with trying to grow monkshood. I've tried at least 3 or 4 times and never have any luck. It is strange that they are such an easy care plant for some and so finicky for others, sigh....

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

My Fothergilla hasn't started to change color yet, leaves are still green. The Crepe Myrtles sure are putting on a beautiful show, great color.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I'm looking forward to everyone's foliage pictures, since I'm not seeing any fall color yet!

My crape myrtle and J maples haven't done anything.

All the viburnums are still the exact shade of green as they were a month ago.

I'm starting to get a little bit impatient...

I just realized one of my oakleaf hydrangeas are turning a gorgeous shade of red, but only on the inner leaves, so you have to get really close to see the beautiful colors.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Our red maple is turning and it looks pretty gorgeous. I'll have to snap a pic tonight and post it.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I always seem to have plenty of gold leaves in fall, so I try to add things with red fall foliage when I can. The Fothergillia looks nicer (less wimpy) as a hedge, at least that was what Aspenhill-Terri & I thought after seeing at at the Philly show a couple of times. I put 3 'Mt Airy' in this summer, but they went shocky and dropped their leaves... I'm not sure they're dead, although they sure don't look good... still, I'm going to cross fingers and hope they leaf out in spring.

I just planted a small-leaf rhodi behind and slightly to the left of one of the Fothergillia... I figure the rhodi folliage will fill in the view. I tucked some ferns around it while I was digging. :-)

donner---
If you have never du up a Monkshood--you may not know that they
really do not have too many roots to speak of. All they have is small corms
at the end of every stalk. If you dig them up--they all just fall apart.
So--it cannot be "root bound" in my 12" pot.

I planted them just now. The soil was loose and very diggable--as I think
I have dug it up a few times already.
I dug a hole, threw some bone meal in it and a bit of all purpose fertilizer.
and carefully pulled up the whole bunch of Monkshoods, set them in the hole,
filled it back up with the soil--patted it down and watered it.
Honest-there was nothing much root-wise there.
My Monkshoods nave NEVER had the pleasure of good air circulatio
or sunshine. Not much watering either. This all will change next year.

Need to buy a bag of mulch. I don't have any! Keeping my fingers crossed.

Terri--why don't you try to re-locate yours too. may help.
Last week, there was an Article here by Todd Boland on Monkshoods.
Did you read it? It was quite informative. A bit heavy on the "toxic" stuff--
but it is a serious concern.

Seq, which Witch Hazels turn red in the fall? My Hamemelis vernalis turns yellow. I have new Hamamelis virginiana shrubs which haven't changed color yet, so I don't know what their fall colors will be.

Critter, I planted my Spicebush in back of the wimpiest Fothergilla so it would help fill in the gap. The Fothergillas are young, too; I've only had them for a few years. I probably haven't been giving them enough water and fertilizer. Come to think of it, I'm not sure I've ever fertilized them. I hope yours make it!

Terri--

Here is the link to Todd Boland'a Article on Monkshoods.
Please read it--it is very good! Gita

My Fothergilla is looking good and finally this year put on some growth, this was the 3rd summer which is usually a good year to start seeing growth. The leaves just haven't started turning, yet.

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

That's good to hear, Holly. I can't remember when I planted mine; it might have been 3-4 years ago. Have you ever pruned yours to encourage denser growth? I was thinking of clipping several branches to see if they would branch out.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

No, I haven't pruned it at all, still to small.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Here's what our red sunset red maple looks like tonight.

nice, tree, you'll have many years of beauty from it, Seq.

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

That's a beautifully-shaped tree, Seq. I'm going to seek some more pruning advice for my Red Sunset after its leaves fall.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks! It got a good prune in March. My goal with all our trees is to have them limbed up high so there isn't a 'death zone' underneath of them where nothing will grow. It wasn't always a pretty tree though. Here's a pic from the year it was planted (2010).

List of some other Outback plants on Plant Addicts thread.

That is a stunning arrangement - a feast for the eyes as well as for the birds, bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. I like that fall foliage too.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Very nice GT!

Sure looks very pretty.

Just a note... the pick-up party for amaryllis & lily bulbs is this Saturday, at 2 pm, my house. We'll hang out a bit and then head over to Chef Lin for an early dinner. You don't have to be picking up bulbs to join us! :-)

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

A few pics from the gardens.
The Gazebo and crepe myrtle pics were just taken this morning. Still pretty even after last weeks temps dipped into the 40's. Those Crepe Myrtles sure have a pretty fall color.

Holly--

The Swedish Ivy is missing from your blue containers!!!
Did you take it in as a houseplant-- or did it get tossed?

G.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Some of the dahlias from this years Co-op These were taken last week right before I dug them up.

Ahha Gita, Yes I did clean them out last week before the temps dropped and I have a special pic for you. The Swedish Ivy bloomed. I don't think I have seen it bloom before. Some color from one of the Nandinas, Beauty Berry just loaded with berries, Rose America putting out a few last blooms and the blooming Swedish Ivy. Some of the pic's on this post and the one with the Dahlias might be a bit blurry as it was very windy that day.

These are all from the front wall bed. First group is mostly annuals that are still blooming. That blue Bacopa sure looks good and all the dwarf begonias are still holding their own. The Arum is starting to look really good and I like the play of the different leaves, between it and the feathery folliage of the Astilbe, A couple of Chrysanthemums and the Toad Lilies that are just filled with blooms.

Holly--

I have not grown Dahlias in forever! That beauty-berry is gorgeous!

Swedish Ivy always blooms this time of year---just as I am ready to
bring it in. There will be blooms on every tip of every stem.

I tried cutting them all off before bringing my HB inside--as they make a mess
when they little blooms shed all over the floor.
If you took a macro of one of those little blooms--they liik like little orchids.

I have an Asparagus Fern in my big planter as a "spiller"...Need to dig up
whatever else is in it. Not sure I 3want to habe the Asp. ferm as a houseplant.
That too will shed all over the place. maybe I should hang it in my Bathroom--
right above the toilet. It will have some humidity.....just have to put a new
hook in the ceiling. The old one pulled out....It is right in front of the window--
sooo--good sun there too......:o) Gita

Little bit of color in the perennial shade pots, Osteospermum always one of the last annuals flowering, geraniums are still going strong, hoping the seed heads of the castor bean will mature before we get a killing frost. If not I will be looking for seeds from some of you more southern growers.

Holly, (and Ric) all your hard work has paid off, and even the hard work you claim not to have gotten done. Very very pretty. The setting with Arum and fern is especially gorgeous.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Noid brug looking great.

Honeysuckle berries.

Oakleaf hydrangea foliage.

Tall native aster that's fallen down.

Holly, such great pictures! Those dahlias are beautiful.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Yes, I noticed that the Swedish Ivy blooms look like tiny orchids. The petunias and lavender are both looking good. Couldn't forget the Red Maple or the Hyacinthe Beans.
Just get a look at the Banana grove there are atleast 14 banana stalks in there and Ric is 6th tall.
