CLOSED: Spider ID

Jackson, MO(Zone 6b)

I picked off some seeds to a Gloriosa r. Lily vine, and this spider crawled onto my finger, fell into the terrazzo planter, and blended in with the dirt. I tried really hard to get a picture of this spider. There was an Orb web in front of this planter for several days before I encountered the spider, so I think it's an orb spider.

This is a brown spider about the size of a nickle. It blends right into the dirt. If you look at the center of the picture, there's a strip of dried blade leaf going from the upper left corner down into the center of the picture.

There's a pod below the gold blade leaf that's a triangle pointing to the center of the picture. Within almost center are three pieces of mulch making a triangle. The spider is in the triangle in the shade below the gold leaf blade in the picture. You can make out the front of the body and a couple of it's legs.

I hope you can ID this for me. I'm afraid to stick my hand into the planter to dig out the Gloriosa Lily tubers until I know what I'm dealing with. I will wear gloves.

It is an orb weaver, either an Araneus or possibly a Neoscona sp. All orb weavers are harmless to humans.

I will look these spiders up. Thank you for replying. I was afraid it would be impossible to id.

Excellent Flapdoodle! You nailed it. Thank you so much. Love all the smart people on this website!

It may be harmless, but it's the ugliest spider I have ever seen. Yuck!

It's Neoscana crucifera

I know you've solved your question but I am having a heck of a time locating the spider. I see a giant one at the top of the picture near where it lists your name and this website..a tan, hairy looking thing. Is that what you're talking about?

The triangular pod is pointing down and a little to the right. At the end of the pod's point, there's three sticks of mulch the top piece of mulch is thin the other two are fat. Inside this triangle of mulch is where the spider is. It has two very thin horizontal white stripes, and there's a couple of the spider's legs sticking out in front of it.

Hope you can see it. It's really hard as it blends right in. Can you enlarge the picture with your computer with zoom? I believe you could see it then. It's really camouflaged.
