In my googling it seems this may be a paper wasp, although it *seems* to have more of a fuzzy thorax than any of the pictures I've found. I've taken a video of the thing:

It looks like a vespid wasp, but need a clearer image - try placing the container in a refrigerator for an hour or so, then shake out the insect onto a plain background and take a couple of close-up photos before it revives...
Definitely one of the yellowjackets in the genus Vespula - might be Vespula acadica - http://www.biodiversity.ubc.ca/entomology_pictures/Hymenoptera/Vespidae/Vespinae/Vespula%20acadica%20male%20%283lateral%29.jpg
Thanks a lot! It sounds like (from some other research) that this particular insect isn't a pollinator, so I won't feel bad calling the exterminator.
