Questions on fall prep of roses and bulbs

(Chris), IA(Zone 5a)

Good afternoon,

I have knockout roses - do these need to be cut back and if they do, when is the best time to do that - now in the fall or in the spring.

Also, I received tulip, crocus, daffodil and resurrection lily (naked lady) bulbs - do they have to go into the ground now or can I store them in the unheated garage for the winter and plant in spring.

Thanks! :)

Hello,

Knockout roses are best trimmed after they go dormant in the fall. If trimmed too early, they may push new growth and that new growth will not have enough time to harden off before winter.

In regards to your bulbs, it's best to plant them in the fall during or after leaf drop but before the soil freezes. I'd avoid storing them over the winter because there is a chance the bulbs could desiccate and be useless in the spring. Also, if your unheated garage is attached to a heated building, it might not get cold enough for the bulbs to emerge from dormancy properly.

Good luck!

Thank you for the help! We'll get the bulbs in the ground this fall :)

Sure thing, good luck with them!
