I just found this caterpillar on my Hummingbird Trumpet plant. It think it's part of the Hawk Moth life cycle but would like to know if this is correct. I have also found two black "things" not too far from the caterpillar (you can see one on the right side of the picture) -- do they also below to the Hawk Moth?
thanks, Judy
CLOSED: Hummingbird or Hawk Moth
This appears to be a caterpillar of a white-lined sphinx moth, Hyles lineata. Caterpillars of this species are highly variable in color pattern; see http://www.silkmoths.bizland.com/hlinelin.htm for some examples.
Thanks for your response and the link to the pictures. I did find out that the black "things" are caterpillar "poop"!
