I've struggled with growing watermelons in a heavy clay soil. While they taste OK, the vines are not vigorous and the fruit are 1/10 of the size they should be. I've read up that I should be planting in sandy soil, compost, manure, etc. And next season, I probably will grow these in raised beds with ideal soil. So my question is, how do I know how much of each soil ingredients (compost, sand, etc) to put in a raised bed? Is there a ratio or % or ideal mixture that I should use per square foot of melon hill? If you had a raised bed for watermelons that had approx. footprint of 4' x 8', how would you fill it?
