Hello! I have moved to a new house and it's time to get the yard in order. I have three unsightly stumps in my front yard and I was hoping for some tips on how to remove them without digging them up. Someone told me I could dissolve them with buttermilk?
Thank you in advance!
tree stump removal
I can't really speak to using butter milk but a cheap and fast way to get rid of them if burning is allowed in your area: stack charcoal briquettes around the stumps and light. Let them burn out on their own and your stump should be gone.
If burning is not allowed or too dangerous, dig the soil out around the stump and use a chain saw to cut level to the surface. Replace soil and use some new soil to cover the stumps and plant grass. The stumps will be gone in 3-5 years depending on moisture and fungal activity.
Drill large holes in the top of the stump. Fill with urea, which is 46% nitrogen. The nitrogen will cause an explosion in the population of organisms that cleave hydrocarbon chains. Within a very short time, the stump will be so punky you'll be able to kick it into pieces. As an alternate to the urea (you can buy it in 50 lb bags at elevators and farm stores or Espoma pkgs it in 10 lb bags for about the same price) you can use a high-N lawn fertilizer. Something like 33-0-3 or 27-0-3 would work fine.

Wow, that's an interesting tip! Thanks, I'll add that to the memory bank ;-)
