Has anyone here had experience with planting young fern outdoors in September? Specifically, I live in Wisconsin and have about 40 Japanese Regal Red ferns to plant. Will the roots set before they freeze off? As an alternative, I could take them into the basement and let them go dormant and plant in May. Opinions?
Thanks!
Plant ferns in fall?
I have no experience with ferns in particular, nor with Wisconsin. But generally speaking, planting in fall is much easier for plants. Here is an article I wrote a while ago on the subject.

Hi dpc5190 - The best time to plant ferns is when there's lots of rain which is usually spring and autumn.
September in Ripon is close to September in my area and it should be a great time to plant those ferns.
Most ferns are hardier then you would think. I have several types that have survived through drought, floods, tons of snow and unusually cold temps. I even have a Japanese Painted Fern that completely disappeared when it drowned it's first year. It suddenly started growing again this spring after a couple years and looks great.
