Visions of Winter Sowing in your Head Yet?

Natick, MA

Am I nuts or is any one else thinking winter sowing yet?
I am still working on my garden and fall planting, bed prep, etc. etc BUT I have already ordered my seeds for this winter as I just learned of wintersowing this year...WHERE have I been!? Am anxious to try it, but can wait for winter yet...I enjoy Fall too much before the COLD weather sets in. So what are YOU going to plant this winter?

Calgary, Canada

Ordered most of my seeds for next year.
I am not sure which will be for wintersowing yet.
Delphiniums for sure. Canterbury Bells?
Perennial Candytuft. Cluster Bell flower.

Natick, MA

CL, have you wintersowed before?
Delpniums and Foxgloves are on my list, as well as
Armenian Basket Flower
Salvia
Zebra Hollyhock (malva)
Painted Daisies
Evening Primrose, sundrops
spanish lavendar
Money Plant (Luminaria)
Red hot Poker plant
Hollyhock, Indian spring mix
Rose mallow
Moon flowers
Morning Glories
Deloperma/Ice Plants
Lupine Russell Mix
Astilbe Bella Mix
Agastach
Butterfly weed
Campion Rose

Canterbury Bells would have been on my list but missed ordering seeds, may pick up locally

Calgary, Canada

Yes, I have winter sowed before for several years.
Russell Lupins are on my list also.
I'll have to go through the seeds, as they come,
and decide whether they should be WS.
Several alpines to WS also.

I tried it last year, it was mostly a failure. But what fun to be inside planting things in the dead of winter, when there is nothing else to do in the garden. Then in the spring, things just sprout and it is really fun to see. I am not sure why I had trouble, possibly used the wrong plastic (see prior thread about opaque milk jugs). Or possibly it is my climate-most people who do it seem to be from colder, snowy places like you. This year I have a source of 1 gallon vinegar jugs I will try.

The advantage is that the seedlings are already hardened off.

Sorry to hear of yr futile experience!

valal-
You gave me a nudge and I went and ordered some seeds. I found that Thompson and Morgan is completely changed, they used to have all kinds of odd and interesting things, but those days seem to be over, the catalog now reminds me of Burpee. I ordered from plant world seeds: (some are not for wintersowing)
Aquilegia buergereana oxysepala
Digitalis 'Red Skin' they made this hybrid themselves
Digitalis lutea (I have some, want more)
Eucomis bicolor (this might be hard to germinate, gotta read up on it)
Globularia cordifolia (why did I deadhead my plant and not collect seeds?)
Helleborus 'Wester Flisk'
Iris foetidissima 'citrina'
Iris graminea the Plum Tart iris supposed to smell nice
Iris innominata
Iris latifolia
Iris milesii
Leycesteria formosa 'Gold Leaf'

Mimi,
Going to do my first winter sow this year. You?
Have you grown iris from seed before?
Some interesting seeds!

I should mention that I ordered my seeds from Sample Seeds (Remy) and Swallowtail Seeds; I have to recommend both of these (as does DG)...I received my seeds within a week; Swallowtail also posts on their website if you order today, your seeds will be shipped on such a day (usually the next day). I was very happy with both and would order again.

Hi valal, I am already collecting containers for winter sowing and want to try tomatoes this year because I see so many seedlings sprout from the compost . You gave me an idea to try candytuft because I have a pack of seeds and also some delphiniums too, since I tried them last year and they germinated but I only have one plant that survive the slugs. I tried putting crushed egg shells around them and I think that's why one survived. I was doing some research and saw where the shells affect the slugs as they crawl over it.

Mlm...my auto correct keeps misspelling yr name! I hope years experience goes well for you. Do yr foxgloves not seed ? I have never grown them before but also have some seeds.

I ordered my seeds from2 Dg recommended sellers: sample seed shop and swallowtail garden seeds. Both were great experiences. I like swallowtails web site a lot and being able to get around fast, nice photos, info etc

Cy.....I'm collecting my containers as well...hope I have enuf! LOL
So disappointing to lose your seedlings to slugs!

I am looking forward to hearing everyone's experiences

Yes valal , my foxgloves do reseed for me . I am now holding on to one plant because they are supposed to be biennual and will last for three years or so .I have some new seeds that a garden buddy sent to me so I will sow some more this year. Winter sowing is really a miracle that you will enjoy as I have been doing it for three years now.happy gardening

valal don't worry about the name, I answer to mimi too (I think lots of people's autocorrect does that).
I cut off the D. lutea stalks this year before they could make seeds, because they were falling over and I want that part of the garden to look neat. Regular foxgloves have naturalized around here, and I do get volunteers in my yard. I had a purple one once that was over 6 feet tall!
Hmmmm, eggshells. I am more and more not wanting to use poisons in my yard, but I would like to deter the slugs. I guess I will go dig todays eggshell out of the recycle bin.

My first WS experience was pretty much a bust too, I chocked it up to a wicked winter and subsequently kept my ability confidence intact, lol.

MLM, I took in a couple of cats that needed a home, they had playfully broken branches of new varieties I had planted and intended to collect seeds from. I cut the branches/stems with that were in bloom and stuck them into a jar of water...there they finished their blooming and ultimately produced seed.

You can have your cake and eat it too!

The paper seed catalogues have started arriving.
I am dropping them off at a book exchange, since I have already done my seed ordering.
That way I won't be tempted by the pretty pictures!

Natick, MA

Oh CL,
You'real wise beyond yr years....but I don't need the paper catalogs....I'm on the web looking at "all the pretty pictures" deploy when someone posts pics and or I am not familiar with the spdcies. I am my own worst enemy. But I have told myself now that I placed my third seed order for additional seed that I couldn't live without that this is it for this year. I'll have to start making a list for next year lol

Calgary, Canada

No! --- I am an old woman who is too late smarter.
I ordered way too many already.
And now, when I sow, I must control how many I start.
Last year I started too many for the time I had to plant them out in the garden.

Natick, MA

My husband the other day says "I think you shouldn't do as many as you're planning on doing" (about winter sowing. The scary thing is, I dont think he really KNOWS how many seeds I bought and how much I plan on planting....I think he just knows me in general because I tend to overdo in general when I'm doing a project! LOL. And he hasn't left me yet ... LOL!

My daughter tells me I am like a kid in a toy store, because one year she came across this garden center and bought me a $100.00 gift certificate for Mothers day and I was so happy . I told her do not ever change my Mothers day gift so ever Mothers day I get my same gift . laugh I am spoiled now.

Natick, MA

That sounds like the PERFECT Mother's Day (or ANY kind of) GIFT to me!! ;o)
