I found this little guy on the basement stairs of our house on the west coast of Newfoundland, Canada.
He is brown in colour with light speckles of black. The abdomen is striped bright gold and iridescent. This is also the said for the side of the thorax. His mandibles look sharp and are pointed and cross over one another when stowed.
Thanks!

Ontholestes cingulatus (gold and brown rove beetle). Took me some serious searching to find this one! Gorgeous find!
Thank you Reichnekov!
He looks like quite the hunter. I have never seen this type of insect in this area before, but we get plenty of black beetles the same size. I let him go and it twitched its golden butt as it walked off.
I've never even heard of them. But it was too beautiful to not know what it was 😜
Yeah, I was a little obsessed to find out what this was, haha. The iridescence really catches your eyes. The pictures don't do justice here. The stance of this insect is more like a cockroach too.
That's what I was thinking it was like by it's back view. But the abdomen and such made me think 'whoa' xD
