Need help to pack ficus lyrata for long international flight

Ottawa, Canada

Hi Everyone,

Not sure if this is the right forum to ask, but I'm so desperate.

I'm flying out to Asia next month, and I love my two ficus lyrata plants so much that I will take them with me. They are about 3 feet tall.

I'd like to know if they would survive the flight, and more importantly, how best to pack them for a 30-hr international flight.

Thank you for your help.

I'm not familiar with that particular plant, but flying above 30,000 feet is usually too cold, so make sure the hold is pressurized. But, my husband tells me, you need to make sure it's ok with the country you're travelling to (introducing foreign vegetation) and the airline wil probably charge you plenty. Then, you should look in the Trading Plants forum for instructions on packaging plants for travel. Good luck!

Pretty sure they will have to be bareroot, as a lot of pests are found in soil (and soiless) mixes. Is there no one who could plant sit for you? Seems a shame to have to deal with foreign agriculture and chance having them confiscated.

These are not rare plants - are you sure it's anywhere near worth the trouble of doing this?
