PROPAGATING HYDRANGES

Harwich Port, MA

I did everything according to the instructions on several YouTube videos to start growing hydranges from stem clippings. All the stems have died, a gentle tug tells me they didn't root. What went wrong?

What all did you do? Hard to tell what went wrong with so little information.

What type of hydrangeas did you try to propagate? Typically macrophylla and paniculatas are quite easy. Paniculatas often just need to be cut with some semi-hard wood, stripped of leaves on the bottom and inserted into the earth or a pot of potting mix and kept moist. Macrophyllas can often be propagated by the same method or simple ground layering - bend a branch to the ground and place a weight on it to keep contact with the moist ground. Make sure the contact is with a node or two since this is where the roots will form. Same goes for a cutting - a node or two inserted in the ground should be good.

In reply to your questions, Endless Summer is the variety, also some "Lacey" ones, I cut non-blooming stems from Mother plant, cut off bottom stem up to next set of nodes, dipped end of stem in rooting powder, placed in regular potting soil mixed with peat and placed in shady area

Hey Barbaraparm,

In the future, just reply to the same thread instead of starting a new one. This keeps the discussion moving along nicely. Anyway, since you are doing a macrophylla, it should be fairly easy to root.

Here is a good link to look at.
