What are they, friend or foe? thanks for your help
CLOSED: These guys are always dead when I notice them
Empty 'shell' (exoskeleton) of a nymph of a dog-day (annual) cicada. Like their periodical cousins, they spend the vast majority of their life as nymphs underground feeding on the sap in tree roots, and once their nymphal development is complete, they emerge from the ground, climb up on something, and then the adult insect emerges, leaving its old exoskeleton behind....
Very interesting and yes, I would agree that is what I have seen. Question: it the nymphs live underground sucking on tree roots, how much damage can they do?
thanks for your help.
They do not appear to cause any appreciable damage...
