CLOSED: Rove Beetle ID
Short of examination under a dissecting microscope by a specialist in this group, I believe there is faint hope of a specific i.d. for this specimen The family Staphylinidae is a huge family with a great many species that superficially resemble one another. About the best I can do is say that it might be in the subtribe Staphylinina of the tribe Staphylinini in the subfamily Staphylininae - see http://www.pbase.com/tmurray74/image/124725518 for an example...
Thank you Flapdoodle. Is determining an ID for all rove beetles so daunting? If so, I won't waste any more of your time or mine posting others.
As I mentioned earlier, this is a HUGE family (nearly 60,000 species known); there are only a relative handful of species that are so distinct that I would attempt a specific (or even generic level) i.d. from an image...
