I have a lilac that recently developed an area near the top center of drooping, browning leaves. The rest of the shrub (9' high, 5' wide, only 5 yrs old) seems normal. Main branch about 4" diameter with no signs of insect damage. What's happening?

Lilacs can get a type of blight that looks similar to fire blight, so you might want to cut out and burn the affected shoots just to be on the safe side. Be sure to do this while they are dry, though, to avoid spreading the disease. You can look up "lilac blight" to see if the symptoms look similar to what your shrub has.
