Sitting on our front porch we've been visited twice in the past few days by a curious insect that
We have provisionally id'd as the female red velvet ant--red with black stripe on rear, approx.
one inch long. Is this insect common in Md (suburban Washington, DC)?

Red velvet ants
Don't know about it being 'common' there, but they occur as far north as New England - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dasymutilla_occidentalis
