This was the dominant deciduous tree in the Dakotas (along with Green Ash). The rangers called it a cottonwood but couldn't give tell me what kind. Is it Populus Deltoides (Eastern Cottonwood) or a subspecies Populus Deltoides var. occidentalis (Plains Cottonwood). Have I stumbled into a taxonomy hotspot among botanists?
North Dakota Cottonwood
You've stumbled into a much-disputed taxonomy hotspot ;-)
