Odd wasp-like bug in Mississippi, USA.

I have no picture, sorry. But it's a rather large (2-3 inches maybe) wasp-like winged insect with an appeared to be a red thorax and a yellow and black (stripped?) abdomen. My instinct was first to capture it but I couldn't. Any help would be great!
