Another Bridgewater State gem. Very cool stems and leaves
I love college campuses for plants. Well-shaded, no mosquitoes, exotic varieties...
Three Leafed Beauty?
Probably Acer cissifolium, but there are other odd exotic maples too that are trifoliate.
Need to get you to observe and photograph all the plant's parts - like interesting colored stems on newest growth (green, as opposed to normal gray or brown on most woody plants), and details of new dormant buds, etc. Maybe even a closeup of the smooth gray bark on mature trunks of trees like this...
And - perish the thought - clear images of the leaf arrangement along the stem! Can anyone else make out whether this tree has opposite or alternate leaf arrangement? I didn't think so.
I'm wondering if it might be an ash of some sort. Look for any fruit, that'll clinch the genus easily.
Resin
The other very similar trifoliate maple like this is Acer henryi.
