The leaves on this large tree were too broad for me to recognize, but the bark looked strangely familiar. This was right next to my other high school tree post.
What am I not getting here that I feel I should?

Compound Leafed Mystery
I was going to say something relating your plant (Ash) to a hole in the ground...
That looks just like a Green Ash - Fraxinus pennsylvanica.
I should have known that would be a prime suspect with the opposite leaf arrangement. I think most of the ashes I see are white with thinner leaves. Once again, I'm going back to try the leaf scar test and see if it's C shaped.
Collect a branch, and bring it back for close scrutiny...
