Interesting Fruit on This One

This reminded my of the Manchurian Walnut I found a few weeks ago. It was on the edge of a high school campus, overgrown with various other species. I did the best I could with the Ipod.

Any idea what this is?

Well, I hope you remember that the Manchurian Walnut had compound foliage...

This tree has simple foliage, alternately arranged. It also has a handsome crop of fruit starting to mature.

Nyssa sylvatica - Blackgum.

This makes my day, as I've been slogging through swamps to find one of these on my on without any success.

I have to go back and find it again and get a better feel for it.

Nyssa sylvatica also seems (to me) to have unusually thin and horizontal branching, at least on young ones. Can't say that's a great ID tip but its something I see.
