I have just learned from the plant ID forum that the pink flower in the photo below is a pink form of Papaver rhoeas, or corn/field poppy! Yay! This is from Critter's poppy seeds from the seed swap. :-)
So now I have an orange California poppy, and a pink field poppy. I wonder if I'll get any red poppies?
FIRST FLOWERS SUMMER!!! Mid Summer Edition
Didn't get my new Coneflower planted tonight....my neighbor walked over and
had me 'captive audience" as she walked me all through her garden showing me
everything that is growing. Hard to get away....
She has already rooted several bunches of mt white Azalea and is working
on rooting the Carpet Rose. She took more cuttings from it as some
of the 1st ones are not making it.
I cut off 2 whole new stems, from below (NO buds on these) of my KK Hibiscus.
I told her that I have never had luck rooting this plant. I will be VERY excited if she does!
She also has a bucket-full of gold-speckled Acuba rooting fot me--but I told her
I was not interested...as I would ONLY pot these if anyone wanted them at the swap.
If any of youdo--let me know NOW.
Sally--No! I did not grow any Moon Flowers. Haven't had much luck with them.
They are SOOO slow to germinate....I also have NO place for another climbing
vine that gets any sun.
Cat---I am happy that you have a Heliopsis blooming from seed!!! YEAH!
They will spread by roots as well as from seed.
Just FYI--bunnies like to chew their leaves off and sometimes the whole stem.
Put a fence around these.
SS--I do not consider a 1gal. perennial a "bargain" at $7.98.
But--as it seems to be a NEW plant--and since it was so pretty--I just had to splurge.
I do not go to all kinds of nurseries buying plants that cost an arm and a leg.
I shop right here at local growers and Nurseries.
Besides--I REALLY do not have anywhere to put new plants or shrubs.
This drives me crazy!!
I guess you all around the DC area do this like there's nothing to it.
A trip here....a trip there...some trees and some shrubs...no biggie....
a group Buy of a zillion bulbs? Why not? ...........
I have to be more frugal about spending money. NO hubby to pitch in. All house
bills and taxes and groceries and gas, etc are mine to pay.
OK! I better stop whining.... G.
The red Flanders corn poppies should be easy from seed.
I sowed a lot of the red flanders poppies, Sally! The seeds were a few years old-- not sure if they were all viable. Plus, apparently poppies are similar to lupine in that they prefer cooler summer weather than we typically have around here. And of course my yard is like an oven for much of the summer...
Several of you talk about your Crocosmia. How do you like them? I recognize the name but was surprised they seem more common than I guessed. Do they grow vigorously?
What I'm really asking is, will they be getting into swap-circulation sometime...
8^}
Catmint, I like that combination of yellow and red. It just looks happy! What's the yellow flower?
I deadheaded coreopsis Zagreb, hoping for a second flush. We'll see!
thanks, SSG! It is Cosmos sulphureus. It and the Cosmos bipinnatus have both been big pollinator draws. They also came up quickly from seed this spring, and have been blooming pretty much nonstop. I'm definitely sowing them again next year.
I've had good luck with getting reblooms from my threadleaf coreopsis after deadheading.
Catmint, I can't believe your viola is still blooming! That's gotta be unusual for our area, right? Our summer hasn't been as blistering hot, and no 100 degree days yet.
I think I just lucked out and happened to put it in a spot where it gets enough sun but has just enough shelter in the afternoon. It's also one of my moister beds.
always love viola. always thought they preferred cooler temps though. I'm surprised that our pansys are still blooming too
our crocosmia is about 4 feet wide. pretty spectacular this year. it is in a pretty dry area that used to be our hummingbird garden. I'll try and take a pic while it's still in bloom
thanks for the crocosmia info.
Get a load of this wild thing, Ismelia
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/152372/
wow love that Painted Daisy, Sally!
It's got those long skinny leaves? Could I have given you some Corepsis- or at least, it might resemble what I am calling coreopsis in my yard...could be an uncommon Rudbeckia.. I think I got it by stealing seeds from alongside a county bike path years ago.
Yes I was wondering about Coreopsis too! :-) or an unusual Rudbeckia...
hahaha...
Hey Seq, I'm trying to get you a picture of my pink Rose of Sharon....today's excuse, the camera won't work, probably let in the rain one too many times
8^O
Sally maybe you found a whole new species on that bike path all those years ago! :-)
Cat, I love the pics of your garden. So beautiful especially those poppies. With leaves like those, I'm betting it isn't a coreopsis. I'm thinking probably in the rudbeckia fam.
GT, if ever you want to gift some of your skullcaps at a swap, I call dibs :)
Sally, stop slackin an take that ROS pic!! :P
Here is my ROS - 'Blue Satin' is finally blooming here. The lilies are still going strong and the daylilies are getting started.
#2 - Either 'Dizzy' or 'Tiger Woods'. I planted both - one group came up, the other didn't, and they look so similar in the plant database that I can't tell which one it is - poooohhhh...
#3 - 'Kissproof'
#4 - Daylily 'Nosferatu'
#5 - Daylily 'Lavender Vista'
thanks, Seq!
Yes, I'm going to call it Rudbeckia sallyeri. :-)
Beautiful lilies, Aspen! I especially like the Nosferatu and Lavender Vista.
I couldn't find any pics on that one Cat. It's pretty whatever it is.
Terri, I see the face of Jay Leno in that 4th pic. Lol...with that bottom petal as the 'chin'. I'm such a goof but that's what I saw.
Jeff, you goof. I'm trying hard to see Jay Leno but I dunno LOL.
David, thanks - I'll take your word for it! You don't know how much it was bugging me. I kept flipping through the online pictures of both, and couldn't tell the difference. Now my OCD self can stick a label on it :)
Rudbeckia SALLYerii-- it's newly named! :-)
haha---
What ever it is I have a huge patch, I'm trying to post pix from the phone. At this point it might be easier to dig up the plants and drive them around to you all in person...arrggg!
Terri that sure is a blue Rose of Sharon.
TAA DAAAA
A challenge is an opportunity to grow and learn. Is that embroidered on a pillowcase somewhere? Or written across a poster of a rock climber dude or dudette, more likely
I now know how to use the USB cable to transfer pix to computer from android phone.
Rose of Sharon, now officially named 'Jeff's Pink' in my garden at least. It's just the less common, pink form, of the common ROS I've seen forever in purple or white. as far as I know.
Giant black stemmed taro leaf
CasaBlanca lilies with Liatris- lilies' scent made last night's weeding more enjoyable
very pretty Sally!
I'm going to have to move our Casa Blancas if it's not too late. They have been in a dry-as-a-bone spot for years and have never ever bloomed...
We got in pots of Elephant Ears this week.
They look like the dark-leafed kind...in gallon+ pots.
Also large, violet-colored perennial Hibiscus. Very pretty...
ALL trees 50% off. ALL shrubs and Roses--25% off. G.
Beautiful zinnia, Wind! I love the soft, dusky mauve color.
Sally, the taro leaf is huge. I wonder if that's what we saw at Betty's? I like the lilies and liatris together!
What I usually do with my phone photos is email them to myself, then download them from the email to my hard drive. Unless I've just gotten back from a long trip and have hundreds of photos--then I'll pull out the USB cable. I'm sure it's a relatively clumsy way to do it, but usually I am too lazy to find the USB cable, and so it works for me. :-)
I agree with Holly, Sally--definitely smart and capable! :-) And a wonderful sense of humor to boot! :-D

Sally, You are such a smart and capable girl. Great pics everyone. I have some pic to post now that I have finished my painting I can sit back and relax for the rest of the day. Post pictures and chat. Be back in a little bit.
Just a couple new ones....
1&2--My Felicia's Phlox is growing SO tall....over 4' now.
Notice the edging I have put up? Have to finish it around the whole bed.
I also ripped out the "Chrysanthemum Pacificum" that always grew here.
Potted a few cuttings--end of the line for this plant if I don't. Tired of it!
I know happy has a bunch....anyone want to carry this on?
3--NOID Trumpet Lily just popped open by my Phlox
4--Another one--in front of my Clematis
5--Cat's yellow Celosia By some iris ans Lady-in-Red Salvia.
On the NON-floral scene---
1--Cherokee Purple Tomatoes starting to 'color" a bit.
2--One of them closer up. It is full size already--just needs to ripen
3--One more Cuke ready to pick--tomorrow
4--I kid you not--my Cuke plants are climbing my shed roof by now...
Those are the bamboo stakes I cut at Rick's--2 or 3 years ago?
5--The cutting of Olga's Fig I have nurtured since spring, 2013.
It has grown so big--will pass it on any day now. Everyone's "dead" Figs
are now sprouting back from the roots--bush style...
Gita, that phlox is beautiful! I love the color!
Glad the yellow celosia is blooming well for you! :-)
I love that ROS Sally! I'll swap you a seedling :) Look at those wild nails against that that taro leaf.
That phlox is real pretty G!
very nice, wind, and Gita.
yay Holly, you have sure earned a rest.
Seq- do you think cuttings of my ROS would root? I'd hate to give you a seedling and have it be wrong color.
