CLOSED: Popping bug??

Citrus Heights, CA

I was in my backyard when I heard what sounded like tiny pop rocks (the candy that pops in your mouth)...I thought maybe it was sprinkling but no....I looked down and found these tiny orange-ish balls popping all over. Not literally popping like exploding but they kinda hop all over. I don't see any legs or eyes or anything. They look like seeds...this one is in the palm of my hand. Any idea what it is? Do we need to get rid of them?

Looks like a seed to me - there are several species of plants that have seed pods that forcibly expel seeds when fully dry or when touched.

Really? Well, we're keeping a few to see what happens. The just keep popping... We're you able to view the video? The thing pops over and over, it's not a one time thing if that makes it a difference.

Sorry for all the spelling errors... I think my phone auto corrected a few times.. Hopefully you can understand my ramble.

Using your advice, Flapdoodle, I Googled it and found that they are Oak Galls... But I'm confused... This article suggests that they will eventually turn into wasps... Yuck!! I think we'll get rid of them! Here's the article : http://waynesword.palomar.edu/pldec97.htm

I didn't realize that they were jumping multiple times; I'm having problems getting video clips to play properly on my computter. In that case, I see that you just came across the link that I was going to send you...

OT: I don't think this is it, but you made me think of "Mexican jumping beans"...

Vestia, they mention Mexican Jumping Beans in the article. Thank you Flapdoodle :-)
