These are all over the place at a local high school. The leaves are very rough, and the tree itself is more like a shrub in its general vibe..

What do I have here?

I'm getting a bit of a Carpinus sp. vibe from here...maybe a C. betulus clone.

Ditto to Carpinus. Fruit, when produced (maybe just a little too young yet, but shouldn't be many years now), will help identify the species.

These two species (and their genera) are both members of Betulaceae - so it is all in the family, so to speak...

Great point, Neefman. I've sometimes wonder why there aren't more good botany comedians. Where's the botany version of Louis CK? Mmm, you know, it just might work...

In human terms (I know how much you love these questions), how would you describe the relationship of Carpinus to Ostrya? 2nd cousins??
