I'm so nervous... I have two crawling 9 month old babies at home. I'm do afraid of them catching diseases. Is this a roach?? It might have lost a leg or antennae. Please help!!
Please help me.... Is this a COCKROACH??
This is a cockroach, but I cannot tell which kind from this image (need a dorsal (top side) view. I am unaware of any scientific study proving that cockroaches actually have vectored a human disease, but they have been known to trigger asthma attacks.
Thanks for answering. Here is the top view. I'm not sure why it didn't post the first time. I'm freaking out since this is the second one I've found in 3 days. Do u think I have a major infestation? I do not want chemicals in my home with my babies crawling around but I don't think I have a choice. From what I read this is going to be a very difficult challenge to rid them. Anyone have experience with getting them out of my home? We are not dirty people. I clean every day!!
It does not appear to be any of the commoner pest species (German, American, brown-banded, etc.). It might be a wood cockroach in the genus Parcoblatta, in which case you do not have a problem - they will get indoors accidentally, but do not set up housekeeping there.
If you live in town, you don't have to be nasty to have them coming into your home. I learned that the hard way. My grandmother's neighborhood has declined considerably over the last 20 years, and every time I go out with my dogs at night, it's like there's a cockroach party all along the sidewalk and patio, and I've killed at least a half dozen INSIDE the house in the last 6 months I've been staying with grandma. Unfortunately for me, roaches are my cryptonite. But in reality, one a month on average is nothing compared to having an infestation. Unless you have an infestation I don't think actual poisons are warranted, however the roach motels you get at the store are insect growth inhibitors that keep them from developing a protective exoskeleton, and are harmless to animals and people. I have ordered Catnip and Rue seeds which I will be planting around the perimeter of the house as natural deterrents. The catnip is for the roaches, and the rue is for the cats and squirrels that like the catnip. /:) Perhaps you should give "natural" remedies a try since you're concerned about your babies. I've read that bay leaves put in places roaches like is a good deterrent. I haven't tried it because I know my beagle will eat them.
Also make sure all windows and door jams are sealed tight so they can't come in easily in the first place. Oh, and if you've brought in any used furniture, boxes etc in the last few months, check them as a source, and be aware of people coming into your home, we had a roach outbreak at work because they hitched a ride in someone's purse. And please forgive me for rambling, I took a pain pill and I am loopy, sorry.
Another thing I've read is that roaches like high places to roam and only come down to scrounge for food. So it's more effective to place poisons/deterrents up high (cabinets, on top of the fridge etc) and safer for pets and babies when it's out of reach.
I can't wait to go back to my house in the country. I'll take the Scorpions, Copperheads, Cottonmouths, Timber Rattlers and Coyotes over roaches any day!!!
Yes it is a cockroach! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xx34SYqXD2Q
