I was just looking at a post on the book forum where someone had said they enjoyed looking back and it got me thinking of so many things many moons ago. I have many memories of course but being the eldest of seven siblings much of what I remember was looking after babies and going to school. However, I do recollect my first date. Well, not a date so much, as an encounter. I was about 14 at the time and new houses were being built on our estate and we kids used to play in them. I know it sounds tame but a 14 year old way back when really was quite a baby by today's standards. There was one boy I particularly liked and he chased me through this house one day, caught me and clumsily planted a kiss on my cheek!!! I was in seventh heaven!!! But men are so fickle, a couple of day's later he was chasing some other little girl!! It wasn't until I attended college a few years' later that I actually had my first date.........and therin hangs another tale!! Any special first date memories for you??? And this applies to the men as well as the ladies. How about you Horseshoe - I bet you have a great tale to tell!!!!!
Down Memory Lane
This is a true story. I was 16 years old and never had a date. A cousin of mine had a car and where he went to church was having a hay ride. Well I got up enough nerve to ask thsi girl to go. Surprise!! Surprise!! I bought a brand new pair on jeans for the ride. The cousin came and picked me up and off we went to pick up the dates. After we got the girls I was in the back seat and cool Jim was thinking I am going to have a good time tonight. I had started slipping around with the cigarettes and decided I would light one up. I was in that back seat and knew I was hot but not ready for the next occurrence. I smelled something burning. I looked down and it was me and my new jeans. I was so engrossed at looking at the girl that I had forgotten the cigarette in my hand. It had really started to hurt by now and I couldn't get it out. I started spitting on it trying to put it out. I sure was glad I was a good spitter. I finally got it out. Needless to say I never dated that girl again or maybe it was she never dated me again.

My first kiss was on the church bus on my way home from Sunday school. His name was Steven and he asked permission first... I think I was 12 or 13.
LOLOL....Good one GRC!!! The cigarette episode this will have to be called!! My son had one too!! We were on holiday on the Isle of Wight and we all went to the local dance in the evening. My son lit up a ciggie and then asked this girl to dance. He was a real cool dancer as I remember!! I guess he thought he better put his ciggie out and so took off the end and stuffed the butt in his pocket. Yes, you guessed it!! Within the space of a few minutes, smoke started belching out from his pocket!! We just died laughing!! Such manners Gwidion - asking permission to be kissed!! What a nice guy he must have been!! What happened to him??
GRC I love it ROTFL, how embarrassing for you!
Sorry Louisa, no story to tell, I can't remember a first date or even any memorable dates, apart from the sticky kind you get at Christmas (which just goes to prove that food is always first on the human mind). Come to think of it I don't remember many names either ... oh no its too depressing to think about LOL. I'm going to crawl back in my hole.
Oh hang on, I do remember going out with a male friend and his family. We went for an Indian meal and at the end the waiter bought round hot towels, which were wrapped in plastic, to wipe our hands on. My friend picked one up, unwrapped it and before anyone realised, bit into the towel. Silence ensued as we watched agast to see if anything nasty was going to happen to him. He then told the waiter that the cake was tasteless, how did he expect us to eat that rubbish. We all howled with laughter and he denies ever doing that to this day.
An ex boyfriend and myself went for a Chinese meal in Bath. We were given fingerbowls with a slice of lemon floating in it with our meal. Boyfriend was acting very cosmopolitan and talking about the finer points of Chinese cuisine, (I obviously looked like I didn't get out much). The meal was lovely and I ordered some mint tea at the end while my boyfriend wiped his hands on the napkin and drunk the fingerbowl, spat out the lemon and said 'I don't know why they always put that in the tea, it doesn't make it tase any different.' The waiter and I just stared and I dipped my fingers in my bowl to wash them off. The look on his face was such a picture! He never did laugh about that one ;)
Baa who evidently has no romance in her soul only food memories.
Baa you do have a good sense of humor.
I read your post about the bad hair day and now this. I believe you need to post a photo of you. I think you are
pulling our leg. Those are funny episodes.
Baa you certainly ensured my early morning off to a good start. That was so funny!!!!! Your accounts could easily be on a TV sitcom!!! I have a few embarrassing moments which would be more fitting on the jokes forum!!! Obviously GRC thinks you made these stories up so he obviously doesn't know much about the English sense of self deprecating humour. I wonder why foreigners think we are reserved and stuck-up - just the opposite lolol!!!!
Okay yall...ready for this one..(can't belive I am telling this to the world)
I was 18 and this guy I really liked asked me to go with him to his company picknic. I was so happy to go with him. It was a big bbq type thing (about 2 hours car ride).
Now, my mom is a cajun cook, she never cooked pork n beans before. I was at the bbq and tasted them for the first time. WOW! were they good...I ate and ate and ate them..lol..well, I didn't know they would cause you to .. uhmm.. well, you know what happenes when you eat too much beans..hehehehe. Well, the ride home was so painful, I was "holding it in". Finally all that turbulance in my stomach got the best of me, so I decided to put my seat back and go to sleep.Thought maybe if I slept, it would just go away. I don't know what happened after I fell asleep. He woke me up when he pulled in at our driveway. He thanked me, said he had a good time and he would call me later. He did. We dated for 2 years. I never had the nerve to ask him if it was a "musical" ride home, I do know that his window was down. ;)
Louisa; You know I have no idea,.. we moved to a different neighborhood and then I had a short stint as a teen where I didn't go to church so I never ran into him.
Now I am wondering what ever happened to him.....
GRC
Thanks I like to laugh. Louisa is right about self depreciating humour being an English thing but hand on heart all the little stories I write are true if a little paranoid LOL
Since you asked for proof

Louisa
I'm glad I made your early morning. My life is one long sitcom as an old friend says ... Baa it could ONLY happen to you dear. Another thinks I shouldn't be allowed out on my own.
Several American friends who have visited here have all said how surprised they are to see what a free society we have with nudeness and how much we make fun of ourselves, our government and monarchy.
I read the other day that 'The British only take 3 things seriously, politics, war and animal breeding.'

His name was Joel but they called him JD. I was 13 and he was an older man of 15! He had jet black hair and deep blue eyes and I was so infatuated with him that I could hardly stand it. We had Youth meetings once a month and his church group joined ours for those meetings. These were the only meetings when I was allowed to sit anywhere I chose and not with my mother. I sat near the back and he came and sat next to me. I had my hand on the seat next to me when he sat down and during the meeting he laid his hand on mine and we held hands. I was so excited that I felt little shivers and tingles from his touch! After the meeting he bravely went to my Father and asked if he could take me to a movie. Dad put hos hand on his shoulder and told him that he was a fine young man but that I was to young to date. I was crushed! But when I turned 15 he came back and asked again. We went to a show and dinner and he kissed me goodnight at the door. We moved away 2 weeks later and wrote for awhile and then lost track of each other. I ran into him last spring! He is still handsome and has a grandson that looks now like he did back then....may have to introduce the boy to my Grandaughter one of these days!
Wow - what wonderful stories!! Zany you sound quite wistful!!! Lisa you are naughty - but I like you....lol!!!
Gwidion, maybe you should do a search -just for the fun of it and Baa I get into trouble quite often over here because of my ribaldry. I nearly always have to end with "hey, I was only joking"!!! Maybe city folk might understand my lingo, but I like the folk round here and I think my neighbours are getting used to me now :-)
Wistfull, you bet! Not for the old beau but for the youthful memories!
I had a friend at school that wanted me to check out this guy she thought was cute. He lived near me and hung out at Jerrys Sweet Shop. The next day I saw him up there and went in and sat next to him at the fountain ordered a cherry coke and started talking. Thought he was so cute I decided to keep him for myself...He asked me to go to the movies ,I did. I was 13 years old, he was 16. Of course I lied and told him I was 15. That was my first date, I had another date with him on Monday nite Nov.12, it was our 41st anniversary. :0) How about that...I might add its been great.
Now that's what I call a 'True Romance' - how wonderful and belated congratulations for your 41st - a fantastic achievement!!
