Proper display of US flag?

Richland, WA(Zone 7b)

I hope someone can solve this controversy-- this is at our community center in our neighborhood. A few years ago a flag was put up, and immediately a resident raised cain saying it was improper. Our president researched it with VFW, etc., and according to him, they said this is OK, but due to strong objecting by the party, it was taken down and never put up again. We know that if it is against a wall, the stars go to the left- but this is not against a wall- the pole is on a wall in the entrance (it can't go low enough to be at an angle because of the low ceiling). Can anyone confirm? I Googled but none of the examples pertain to our situation. Any help is appreciated.

Check this site to see if it has your answer?

Displaying the Flag Outdoors
When the flag is displayed from a staff projecting from a window, balcony, or a building, the union should be at the peak of the staff unless the flag is at half staff.

When it is displayed from the same flagpole with another flag - of a state, community, society or Scout unit - the flag of the United States must always be at the top except that the church pennant may be flown above the flag during church services for Navy personnel when conducted by a Naval chaplain on a ship at sea.

When the flag is displayed over a street, it should be hung vertically, with the union to the north or east. If the flag is suspended over a sidewalk, the flag's union should be farthest from the building.

Well I can only say it looks fine to me. As there is no disrespect intended, I don't see how there can be a problem with the display.

Here is another site, and this one shows it is OK!

The problem seems to be that our flagpole is horizontal, whereas all the examples I see show the pole vertical or angled. To me, if you took our pole and raised the tip of it up, that would make it correct as in an angled display. I think we will just leave it and see what happens--possibly the guy who complained has gotten a life and won't gripe !

Gripers RARELY get a life... although sometimes they find other "missions" and move on! LOL

LOL, Pat-- emailed the Kennewick VFW and asked them if I sent photos of our display could they tell me if it's correct or not-- hopefully they will reply sometime.

Because the pole is horizontal I agree it is hung incorrectly.

I guess this is absolutely none of my business - jumping in anyway. It seems to me to be such a petty issue - the flag stands for democracy - take a vote. If a majority want it hung horizontal, hang it. If a majority does not want it hung horizontally, don't hang it that way. Be sure everyone understands it may be an issue of horizontal or not at all. It is not right to allow one person to block action by the majority. Just because a guy was loud is no reason to allow him to dictate to everyone else. People like that exert tyranny over others because everyone else wants to be nice and allow someone to be a bully - although the person bullying would deny it and maintain he just wants to be "correct". Considering the news around the world, it is not an important issue at all - the existence of the flag and the willingness to back it up are what is important - not how it is hanging.

YEAH!!! Agreed.

To a veteran the correctness in displaying a flag is not a petty issue.

My idea is that if you imagine the tip of the pole raised at an angle, the stars would be in the same place as if the fleg was at a "normal" angle- so that's why I think it is right. I hope the VFW replies.

Jo, I'm a Life Member of the VFW Post 524 in Corning, NY.

The National VFW website refers Flag Etiquette to: http://www.senate.gov/reference/resources/pdf/RL30243.pdf

The wording at the two websites Linda Kay listed are verbatim from the above Senate's Flag Code. If the flag were hanging horizontally from the wall above the entrance rather than the side wall the person in question might not then have a problem with it. According to the Background section of the Code, "The Federal Flag Code does not purport to cover all possible situations." (You can save the pdf to your computer for future reference.)

This veteran thinks it's fine.

Thanks, soulflier- I had a correspondence from the National VFW that confirmed our display is correct. It now flies proudly at the entrance of our Community Center with no complaints! If ever there is, I have the letter to back it up!
