These guys were gang eating my Tomatoes, the fruit not the plant.

This is a small milkweed bug in the family Lygaeidae (seed bugs), and it would be very unusual for them to be actually feeding on tomatoes. See http://bugeric.blogspot.com/2014/01/small-milkweed-bug.html for detailed information on their life history.
