Located in Central Virginia, zone 7. Found this hanging from the wooden gate post to my goat enclosure, which is located in the trees. It hangs from silk, in the pictures though, it is shimmying around the edge of the plastic container. Anyone know what it is???
This is a caterpillar of a small moth, Coleophora octagonella - the pointed 'case' is constructed of the caterpillar's fecal pellets cemented together.
