Help with Bougainvillea in Georgia, Please?

Washington, GA

I am new to Dave's Garden and would like to request some assistance.

While out and about, I saw the most beautiful flowering plant at a roadside stand. It is a 'Barbara Karst' Bougainvillea. The seller said that it is similar to a rose and that I would not need to bring it inside during the winter. So I purchased it.

I hope that is not a mistake! I live in central Georgia, near Augusta. Most of the information I have found online suggests that this plant will definitely NOT like my yard!

Almost heartbroken, I am hoping that someone here at Dave's Garden will be able to help me take care of my newest addition so that it won't become a dead twig. Please let me know how to properly care for my Bougainvillea so that we can enjoy it for many years. Also, there were some ants crawling on it when I bought it. Do I need to worry about them?

Thank you in advance!

I don't think it will survive a freeze but others may chime in with their own personal experiences. When I had a couple I would put them in the ground in spring and prune, dig, and pot them up in October. I am in the Atlanta area. That got old so I got rid of mine.

Bougainvillea in general will take hard freezes and remain alive. My parents live in the Phoenix AZ area and they are all over the place out there. They live in 9b though so their hard freezes don't last for very long.
