Both Bombus muscorum
(http://www.bwars.com/index.php?q=bee/apidae/bombus-muscorum&page=1) and
Bombus pascuorum (http://www.record-lrc.co.uk/c1.aspx?Mod=Article&ArticleID=G00100014) appear similar to your specimen...

Thanks. The locals were helpful with common names. They called this a golden bee. I've got a few more insects from Orkney that need identification but I'll wait until I'm back in the US. WiFi has been spotty in Scotland.
