Purple Lilac

I was recently given two common purple lilacs, after looking at pictures I have noticed that some are more of a hedge bush, but some are more like a tree. Is there a way to decipher the difference in my small plants or a way to get them to grow into more of a tree instead of hedge?

Many larger lilac species can be grown with many or fewer stems/trunks. Lilacs (especially Common Lilac, Syringa vulgaris) are also known to be colonizing species - which means they tend to produce new trunks some distance from the original trunk/stems.

Your preference in the plant's look directs what you should do when growing this Lilac in your landscape. If you want more of a "tree", then you will need to prune from time to time to direct growth in this manner.
