Oleander and tropical hibiscus cuttings

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Hi all! I took some oleander and tropical hibiscus cuttings a few days ago, and am wondering what methods would be appropriate for getting these to root. I have them in water, and they look 100% healthy for the time being, but I want to act fast before they rot. I've rooted things before but never these specific plants. Will either of them root in water? Or should I try to root them in a container with a mix of peat and perlite? Any advice would be greatly appreciated :))

Okay I'm going to try the peat and perlite route tomorrow, I changed their water and added a drop of superthrive to each cup for the night. Hope they take!

Sorry no one answered you. It sucks when no one answers you.

Good Luck on rooting your cuttings.

If I had rooted Hibiscus cuttings, I would have answered for certain. I'm gonna have to try it myself Becky...Let me know your progress and I'll try some variation to see what they respond to best. First I have to wait for them to make a showing in my garden though...

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Aw, no biggie, I'm used to talking to myself ;)

Robin, did you plant some seeds? I have some hibiscus coccinea seeds I can send you if your wanna try, different from these, but easy to germinate :)

I dug around the hibiscus forums and found this link on rooting hibiscus cuttings, for any interested peeps:

And this one on oleanders, a few different methods:

Thanks Becky! Yeah, Hibiscus coccinea is hardy. I have to be real selective for tropicals because I don't have a lot of room to overwinter. Love to have some! Is there anything I have you'd want? I have successfully rooted some Euphorbia and a Plumeria (not yet ID) but am pretty excited about that. Will share when they've grown a bit.

I've been slowly germinating seeds as my WS efforts are clearly a bust. I am still getting one or two germinated for each container, but woefully lower results than expected. Hibiscus is one that likes to be WS but not impossible to use other methods.

I shall endure!

Thanks for the links, I am an interested peep.

I failed with the Hibiscus cuttings last summer , and my wintersow efforts had been the same as Mipii 's .. oh well , boom and bust ...
I keep watching and thinking about trying again .. Poppies are about the the only thing that did well from wintersow .

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Aw Ju, I feel for your failures too. It's a little discouraging and a little heartbreaking but it gives us another chance to do it over...only better! Besides, I'm sure your successes outnumber your failures over the course of time.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Well at least I can sit in my corner eating my herbs and having a tea (feel free to join me )

While I pout over the last Tropical Hibiscus I tried( Heartbreak Hotel ) name fits ....

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

I'll sip to that! :)

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Robin you always share, I'll send some no trade necessary. The red and the white :)

You guys should try winter sowing again, this was a pretty freaky weather year and really most of us gardeners were robbed of a real "spring".. The only reason I had any wintersow plants make it is because I way overdid it. About a third of the jugs never showed, so can't say I was super successful either.

Aw heartbreak hotel! The irony :/

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Lol Becky, if there ever was a year to overdo it, last year was the year! Either you've got some sort of nature intuition or you've got horseshoes up your butt. There is no third option I said!

I was conservative and calculating, look what I got...almost squat. Yes, you can bet I'll try again, and again...

Truly, I'm so happy you did good. You're such a sweetie (and a treat to know)....thank-you.

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Aw ((hugs)), Robin! You're a doll 😄

We can enable each other until our gardens resemble the amazon rainforest! That's the goal anyway LOL

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

No trade necessary eh?
Even if its this?

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Oh ouch! You twisted my arm so hard w that one! LMAO!! You temptress you, of course I would love that bad boy!

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

I had one of those last year , it did not return.
picked up some wrongs yesterday ,, wow do things get that way , right along with me .
nice things happen , plants and rain has returned ,, think I will go play in the rain for a while ,it was cold day before yesterday , this time warm rain ,, yea !!! lol

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Ju, would you like some Gaura too, if I'm dividing it for Becky, I can easily divide some for you.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

That is okay for now Robin My wants are more than I am able , I have a couple seeds left of the Guara when I get time and room ..
Question though , is yours outside and does it take the Michigan winter ? . You sound as though it does .

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Yes Ju my Gaura has taken two MI winters, it dies to the soil line and re-sprouts in late spring. It's a herbaceous perennial. I snip off the remaining twigs after new growth has started in spring.

Actually...I just found out it has a taproot and doesn't move easily. I'll check for nearby seedlings to send, if not Becky, you're getting the whole mature plant, lol. It likes sandy soil and is drought tolerant, doesn't like too much wet or compaction. And..it sure puts on on a nice display when most others are faded or declining. It doesn't need deadheading and is a beautiful vase shape. Plant where it won't get shaded from other thugs as it starts, because it starts late.

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

No way! If it's just one plant, keep it! I've already got your seeds ready for mail tomorrow, and I told you I don't need anything back :))

Also, I found some 'flying dragon' seeds to add since you have it in your tradelist.. Can't believe I haven't already started some myself!

Aw I wanna play in the rain..

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

Thank you for the info , maybe I will get lucky yet and one will return ,a couple days ago my wild potatoes starting sprouting , now they are just under a foot tall .
mosquitoes are still awful , i am all wet from playing the rain ,
I am wondering if I graft cherry tomatoes on to a bittersweet vine if the tomatoes will be poison , and thinking about the grafting onto the potatoes with a tomato to try for perennial tomatoes ,
Yep ,, always contemplating .
Yes I know wrong thread , but I talk too much anyway ,,, often anyway ,

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Hmm that's interesting about the grafting question. Both whether or not the tomatoes would be toxic, and also whether the tomato/potato graft would work. Lmk what you find out. You could call it a pomato! Lol! Also I've read about grafted tomatoes before, but heard they don't seem to do much better than their non grafted brethren. And more pricey at that. Perennial tomatoes sound very enticing, I wish I could do that here. Maybe in more tropical climates? Hawaii/ florida? You've given me some major food for thought..

Who cares wrong thread, fish weren't biting anyway, let's shoot turtles! LOL

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

Last year I grew Beefsteak Tomato grafted onto Eggplant. I didn't see any better results with regards to fruit production. I would try it anyway...you never know what greatness can transpire from an experiment.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

I remember an elder that grew a beefsteak type that lived for up to five years in central Ohio years ago .
I still wonder what that root graft was, (the rooting stock )

That elder had a favorite cat she had taught to use the indoor people bathroom ,, very different for the time , and I was very young and rather imprinted at either ,, lol

(Robin) Blissfield, MI(Zone 6a)

So, it can be done (in both regards). If any one can figure it out Ju, its you! I'd love perennial Tomatoes.

Anderson, IN(Zone 6a)

My nearest guess is the Potato (perennial here , I am not set to try but might this winter , Light and humidity give me a lot of trouble in the winter here .
At the moment the to potato stocks I can use are in the middle of my Zinnia , I am not digging up my zinnia to try an experiment
It might take cell pressing the tomato ,into the potato root , and I will have to remember how ,(time to "read up" a while, before trying .

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Well I kept both the oleander and hibiscus cuttings in water, freshening it every few days. Today I have roots on the oleander. 3 for 3! Woot!

And I realized I'm the biggest flake ever! Never sent the seeds to you Robin, but they are ready to go on my laundry room dresser. And your groundsel Ju! It's sitting out back in its pot saying "hey I'm ready for my trip!" but it's pleas keep falling on deaf ears here. Lol been real busy w the kids home for summer, eating me out of house and home and leaving trails of mess and crumbs wherever they go, unexpected company coming in tomorrow, and I'm sick to boot! Wah 😭

I'll get everything in the mail next week! Promise!

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Yes the roots are on my oleander cuttings from RV park we stayed at on vacation in May. LOL real nice landscaping there, and them bushes needing pruning! LOL

No signs of new growth from the hibiscus cuttings yet, wonder if it's too late to start them from seed?

Mine are just beginning to leaf nicely. Last years seeds were not too good ..

Sorry there , it was only meant in fun ,, Guess I am the torturer today , made you laugh until until it hurt ..
