I'm trying to learn how to differentiate these species. This tree didn't have any bract and the leaves were large so I'm thinking Americana. I didn't have a camera so stealing a few leaves was the best I could do.

As a hint, when next photographically challenged: note other characteristics about the unknown, like bark (flaky, smooth, ridged/furrowed); form (narrow, wide, tall, short); site (street tree, lawn specimen, forest tree; etc.
Every wee bit helps to produce those otherwise one thousand words.
