I found two of 6" under ground in southern Utah, elevation ~6600'.
I have planted 3 fruit trees and want to know if these things are a threat.
Thanks!

Correction.. 8500 feet in elevation.
This is a nymph of a cicada, possibly in the genus Okanagana. They feed on the sap from roots of trees, but do not appear to cause any significant harm.
