We planted 6 of this plant last summer. They bloomed and thrived until September. We live in Zone 6. I deadheaded throughout the summer and fall and then cut the plant 3 inches above the ground as per instruction. This spring they all look dead. The stalks crumble in my hands. The tag said this is a perennial and will come back year after year. What did we do wrong? I love the blooms it gave us. We will have to replace them all but don't know with what. I like how this plant is low maintenance and low mounding. Can someone help figure out why they died?

Gaillardia are one of those 'hardy' plants that sometimes just don't come back. The same thing happened to me three years ago and I never planted another one again. Certain 'hardy' rudbeckia do the same thing. Some plants don't like it when they are wet over their dormancy period. A snow pack that slowly melts would not be beneficial to these types of plants.
