Ooooh yellow peonies. I always forget about them until I have blown my entire gardening budget. Wish they weren't so spendy!
Yardening May 17+ 2014
Ric and I are giving serious thought to putting in a Tree Peony bed. Have to order soon for Fall planting many are all ready sold out. I have been thinking we need to cut back and how are we going to keep all this taken care of and then I went to the Brooklyn Botanical garden and looked at the Tree Peonies. LOL Years ago I almost bought one and now I am looking at buying 7 of them and putting in a good sized new bed.
Here is my inspiration.
wow. just. wow.
I just called to see if we can pick up our plants instead of having them shipped when we order and was told that they will up date the web site for this fall and orders will be taken after July 1st so maybe they will have some of the varieties that we were looking at that were marked sold out. They won't like our clay soil so we are looking at a good sized area to be dug up and amended. Not a little job.
That middle picture is gorgeous. Very inspiring.
Love tree poenies so one year I bought 3. Two of them have reverted back to just a single peony plant!!!! What a disappointment.
They're beautiful Holly! Fingers crossed for you forJuly! And hope you feel better soon!
Holly - www.peonies.net has excellent prices & selection!! They come with lots of eyes, I just planted mine - wrong time of year, but I forgot about them...coming up nicely!
I told my landlord I would plant the other half of the front yard if he wanted. darn if he didn't rent a rototiller yesterday and dig up the yard. I have a lot of raking of clumps to get the weeds and grass out of it to do. I have some plants for the yard already from shopping with Coleup. Eventually the entire front yard will look like a cottage garden (I hope).
Nice Cat, I can't wait to see it :)
GQ--
I have NEVER seen a yellow Peony!
We have some Peonies somewhere---I need to go look at their tags.
We had Yellow Pear Tomatoes---I even bought one. The plants were huge!
They are cherry tomatoes--but, OH! So sweet....
Are you coming to the Swap? If we get any more in--do you want me to
pick one up for you?
Two weeks to go--I hope it is not too long in those squishy peat pots...
I can keep an eye out for the Coral Calibracea (??sp.). They will, definitely,
be in the Proven Winners pots.
Gita
I don't drive, otherwise I would be at the swap with bells on!
I am sure that someone will have yellow pear tomatoes. They are pretty popular. I usually start some from seed. Home Depot was the only place that I visited with tomato plants out. I haven't done a lot of plant shopping or seed swapping because I have been busy moving. Good thing, I already have 3 new roses to plant.
I saw bright pink Proven Winners calibracea (? sp aka baby petunias). They only had the coral ones in stock in large, expensive multiplanters. If I don't' find any, I'll stick something else in the pot with the purple petunias.
They had a lot of yellow peonies, but they were nearly $60. That is the average price for the yellow ones, but since they aren't moving I am hoping they will go on sale. I should have taken pictures.
Winston the pug thinks that I should log off and take him for a walk around the lake!
Solaris Farms has some pretty lovely yellow Peonies for relatively reasonable prices... eg: Sunny Girl for $35. You can check 'em out here: http://www.solarisfarms.com/Peony%20Herbaceous%20Hybrid%20Catalog.html
They are only bare-root, no potted Peonies.
Oh man, I love Calibrachoas (that's how ya spell it! =D), especially the pink and yellow ones! GQ, I wish you lived closer, you could come visit me at work and I'd make sure you got my discount! =)
Oh NUTS, Holly, you're not allowed to get sick, it's against the rules! I sure hope you get feeling much better real soon.
While perusing my domain this morning before leaving for work, I saw something yellow out back on my shady benches and wondered 'What the heck is that!?'... walked out there and saw it was a volunteer Columbine. YELLOW!! I didn't plant that!! Anyone have any idea which it might be please? I gotta say, I'm SUPER happy with this little volunteer! =)
I'd been seeing the plant for a while now, but knew by the leaves that it was Columbine, so (obviously) I took good care of it; I had no idea what colour it would turn out to be. The plant is about 3 feet tall. :)
Nothing serious, mine own fault I visited my Grands school twice just recently. That pretty much guarantees some small illness
Speedie---
That is an amazingly different looking Columbine! The shape of the bloom is so odd...
And the height of it is unrealistic!
Make sure you cover the blooms when they are going to seed to catch them.
That would be something very special to share.....
Huggy-hugs to you!!!! Gita
Here is my favorite, fragrant flower--the HELIATROPE. That blue is out of this world.
Make sure you get some for the Shop....
These--along with Pentas make my small A/C bed sparkle.
Do you carry Pentas???? Awesome blooms. http://www.burpee.com/flowers/penta/
G.
What we are looking at are tree peonies, more $$$ but rather unusual and beautiful. There is a major grower up near state college with a fine reputation in their field.
http://www.treepeonygarden.com/english/index-eng.htm
They're less than 2 hours away, with a beautiful drive on the way. They ship in the early fall and since they allow pick-up we'll save $140 in shipping. They don't like wet feet so the bed will need to be heavily amended and raised a bit.
Gita, love your beautiful blue irises! :-) I'm also a big pentas fan.
Speedie, is it possible it's Yellow Columbine, Aquilegia chrysantha 'Yellow Star'? They apparently get to be about 30" tall. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/84652/
Ric, SSG and I saw some amazing tree peonies at that local swap! They are really beautiful, and spectacular when massed!
never saw a yellow peony either! sounds interesting
Holly, hope you feel better. all the best to you and Ric with designing your tree peony area. sounds wonderful. I've seen them grown at our church and by a neighbor and they are really nice. I'd like to get a few myself someday
Roses, what do you mean ....reverted back?? how could you tell?
I saw tree peonies at the Cylburn arboretum as well. They're such gorgeous flowers but they take up so much room!
Diana, instead of coming up with what used to look like a trunk with branches, there was just one stem with one bloom on it.
Awesome Columbines, Speedie!
Holly, I hope you're feeling better. I hear your garden calling you....
Catbird- can I bring your Monarda bradburiana over to you? No need to wait another two weeks, and miss the bloom. I am off next few evenings and not a lot going on this weekend either. Was there anything else you wanted? Esp now that you have more to plant.
Gita, we had carried Pentas in previous years, but we didn't get any this year.. mainly because I did most of the ordering this year and I have no idea where they came from before (since I didn't do ANY of the ordering before). Given time, I will figure out more of the details of what/from where.
And yes Ma'am, I will be SURE to catch the seeds for sharing! ... well, most of 'em anyway.. some, I will let self-sow where-ever they want to. =)
Ric, I'm sorry, I should have directed my comment about the yellow (non-tree) Peonies to GQ, didn't mean to sound like I wasn't paying attention. I was listening, honest!! :)
Catmint, that sure looks and sounds like the description of the Columbine ("Yellow Star"), except that mine are not outward-facing, they are downward facing. Of course, that might be because it's a very tall and leggy plant.
Brought home a tropical 'Pineapple Plant' to rescue yesterday - it had gotten knocked over and dislodged almost entirely from the peat. Not sure why, but it seems as tho the pot is filled ENTIRELY with nothing but peat. YUK! I will re-pot it into a bigger pot, with MUCH less peat and give it some happy sunlight. =) Pics later!
Sally, it was not me who requested the Monarda bradburianaly, maybe Catmint? It is a lovely plant so if you do have an abundance of it I will take one.
I am home the evenings this week too if you want to come by and give me some input on the yard.
Catbird- oops!
That would be nice- meet me in dmail
We have a nice soft rain here this AM. I'm hoping it doesn't soak the garden too well. I still have a lot of sewing to do. The rain is welcome though, for what I did get planted, and gives me a day to rest my back.
We never did get any of that rain down here. Guess it's a good thing, and I hope it holds off for the rest of the week - I've got mowing to do Saturday morning. :)
heard gentle showers during the night.
Just checked weather online.. calling for T-storms tonight into early tomorrow morning. OK, it's allowed, as long as it dries out by Saturday morning. ;) LOL!
I got my first mosquito bite of the season. Hello, summer!
The Korean Spice viburnum got a haircut today. I had planned on cutting one of the stems all the way to the ground, but it only needed a couple of branches trimmed. It looks much better now.
Should I cut down phlox divaricata after blooming? Does it ever rebloom in the fall?
SSG, all I know is what MoBot says:
"Cutting back stems after flowering helps combat mildew." Also, sounds like they spread "over time as leafy shoots spread along the ground rooting at the nodes."
I just got one recently. I'm surprised that it's described as a ground cover-- mine seems awfully tall for this.
I know, mine's about 2 feet tall!
If you are talking about "Creaping Phlox"--blue or pink, or...?--it IS aground cover...
I have never seen this plant grow to 2'! You sure it is the same thing we are talking about???
Google--"Creaping Phlox" and look at the "images"....
That is what I am talking about....
G.
Gita, we're talking about the woodland phlox, which is marketed as a ground cover phlox for the shade, but it's much taller than advertised.
Ssg, your Phlox must really like you, 'cause they're not "supposed to" get more than 1' tall.. though for some reason, it is technically considered a ground cover. Maybe give it a couple years to see how much ground it covers? ;)
Gita, Phlox Subulata is "Creeping Phlox". Phlox divaricata is "Woodland Phlox", like Ssg said. :)
Wonder if it'll end up being like my Plumbago... last year it got about 10 inches tall, but was really happy to fluff back out again after being "pruned" with the lawn mower! It ALWAYS flushed back out again with blooms every time! =)
Sadly, not sure it's in the mood to come back this year.. I think I see only 2 sprigs of it. :(
I'm beginning to think that anything that spreads quickly is being called "ground cover". Does your Woodland Phlox spread rapidly??
My woodland phlox (P divaricata) is also about 2' tall. From MoBot: "Woodland phlox is a spreading, native wildflower which forms mats of foliage with stems typically reaching 12-15" tall. Can form large colonies over time as leafy shoots spread along the ground rooting at the nodes."
Sounds like it is not a *rapid* spreader. I'll have to get a photo of mine this morning to share.
I've only had it for a year so I'm not sure, but I'd love for it to spread rapidly! It's a wonderful plant.
speedie, plumbago is a very late emerging plant. Mine is all back and up now finally.
