I'm an HD Garden Club member. Those coupons are very nice. I can always stock up on bird seed if I don't need to buy $50 worth of garden things.
Holly, I can't remember if 'Gold Dust' is the male or female Aucuba, but if you need seedlings in order to make a pair, let me know. I usually have some growing under my 2 Aucubas-gone-wild in my backyard.
Thanks Muddy,
I am getting all kinds of things done today. Very productive no weeding and there is still plenty of that to do but I am potting up and planting all kinds of things today.
Here are those big pots I bought last month. I filled them with:
Astilbe Key Biscayne, Astilbe Younique Lilac, Hosta Limey Lisa, Ghost Fern, caramel colored Heuchera, Dwarf Begonia. The Astilbe and Fern are from the Co-op not sure they will bloom this year but I think it will look really nice once if fills in and I might add a few more dwarf begonias for some summer color this year.
Got all the mowing and trimming done. Got Holly a wheelbarrow full of sifted compost, and helped plant her Pagoda Dogwood. Cleaned the water reservoirs and fed the chickens, collected the eggs, and started supper. Watered the GH and need to run a couple of errands. Then I hope to plant a few things in the garden, if I don't get to it today, I should be caught up enough to work on it tomorrow.
Moved and planted a few of the little Mini plants. The one hosta was getting too big even though it is a small one it was taking over so I gave it a pot of it's own. I have a couple more dwarf hosta think I may plant them over on the side of the house.
The round blue pot has mini hosta, mini heuchera, mini solomans seal, there is a tiny columbine not sure where it came from I didn't buy it so did it come with one of the plants or it's self seeded from one of my columbine. Leaves look pretty small so we will see. The square blue pot has another mini hosta more mini heuchera and a mini Campanula Dickson's Gold. Now I just have to decide where to set the pots.
love it all esp the buddha!
Sally, love your pink iris!
here is a pic of our sad looking blue hydrangea
it does have some growth coming in at the base, so I'm not going to prune it at all yet
too bad it is located directly next to our new little back porch so we get to see it all summer... I've been adding new plants here and there to redirect our attention lol
hopefully it will recover. it will be worth the wait because it is a gorgeous cobalt blue color as you can see in the pic of how beautiful it looked last July
we actually have several babies around too that could be transplanted into that spot if we had to remove it, but I'm going to hope on recovery. Never had this happen before.
Our dead looking buddleias are just as sad looking. Some of them have growth at the bases, some don't.
Dianna--
That blue is to die for!!!! Do you have naturally acid soil to turn it this blue?
Does it have to be any particular kind of Hydrangea to turm blue like yours?
I have friends here that live right on the edge of water--and all their
Hydrangeas are that blue. I have major envy!
My Butterfly Bush is leafing out nicely from the base too.
I keep trying to remind myself that NOW would be the time to spray it
for future Spider Mites.
The hardy begonias are coming up in totally different spots! Happy, I know you've experienced this before too, but this is really strange.
Wind, what an amazingly blue color on that hydrangea!
Gita, I saw a red mite on a pepper plant today. I guess I need to start spraying with neem?
Let the battles begin!!! SPRAY AWAY!!!!
G.
ssg: The begonias will "walk" over to wherever they are happy. They self-seed freely. They are so easy to pull up that I don't consider it a problem. I think they are much easier to transplant when they are tiny -- as they get bigger, they get brittle and are harder to work with.
WOOHOO, I have bananas! The hardy bananas that I got from Coleup are coming up again. If they can withstand last winter they are really hardy..... Last year I had 8 of them, my own little banana grove. I would be willing to give away a few pups if more come up before the swap. LMK
Oh I would love a hardy banana! Mine never came out of dormancy last spring.
Sally, thanks for the new thread, and I can see why your iris is famous. The color is so unusual and so wonderful.
Holly and Ric, your Pagoda dogwood is perfect for that spot and you're right, Buddha looks right at home underneath it.
SSG, I will put you down for one if more of them come up.
SSG/Happy, my begonia hasn't started coming up yet. I was going to dig it out Saturday and plants something else there but I did see some super tiny leaf buds at the soil surface but they were so puny that I'm not sure they'll amount to anything. I never had a hardy begonia before and I really hope it comes back. It was so beautiful last year.
Seq, I hope they come back for you. I love how they bloom when there isn't much else going on in the shade.
Yeah me too. Plus mine had iridescent green/yellow leaves, which were also pretty. We'll see. I figured everything was up by now, even my Butterfly weed and Plumbago.
It seems hardy begonias are the very last perennial to emerge, even later than joe pye weed.
Hmm....I guess I'll keep an eye out then.
My perennial begonia Grandis lives scattered wherever in my kitchen side bed...
I can dig this bed up--turn it over--and they will pop up here and there...
Last year--it grew quitr large--but was, kind of, shaded out and choked out a bit
by other things in this bed--especially all the caladiums.
Talking of Caladiums--mine have yet to surface! I have them all planted in qt. size
pots and sitting outside in decent light. Waiting patiently......as I want to know
where to plant what.
See them behind the tall caladiums?
Gita
Most of my caladiums from the swap didn't come back either except for Critter's speckled one, and a caladium that I had for the past several years that always comes back for me.
I got three from the swap and I potted them up and put them on the warming shelf where I start my seedlings (about 2 months ago). All 3 of them are in various states of coming to life. One has a shoot coming up (looks like I planted it upside down, oops!), one has some roots, one has a few eyes just starting to open on the side of the tuber. I transplanted them all yesterday so that's why I know.
Also the one that I overwintered last year (by carefully digging up and not disturbing the entire rootball and letting it go dry/dormant) got the same waking up treatment and is very slowly putting up shoots.
I planted my swap caladium in the ground a while back but it hasn't shown itself -- I know it needs warmth, though.
that's great Typ... I'll keep an eye out on mine then. maybe they stayed dormant because I moved the pots outside a month ago. maybe it was too cool. My other two came to life inside under the cozy warm plant lights
With the rain we were blessed with I didn't do any yardening this weekend! My plant buddy came & dug up the Gauras & it looks SO much better! This is the last day of cooler temps, I worked until 4 AM & I'm not doing a thing all day!
I have one caladium tip poking through the soil. No signs of life yet from the others.
Almost ALL of the caladium corms I dug up last year made it through the
dormancy in my shop. I air-dried them, and hung them from the shop ceiling in netting.
All but 2 small ones seemed firm and healthy--so when warmer weather was
coming around, (I forget when...) I potted each one in a square, qt. pot.
Not too deep--maybe 2+ inches from the top. I have a tray-full--15 pots.
They are sitting outside in a somewhat protected (from hard rains) spot by the basement
entrance.
It gets decent filtered sun. It is watered appropriately--and, NO, I did not plant any
upside down.
So far--NONE are showing any growth. Bummer!!! I bet it's been a month....
Maybe I should dump one pot and see what's going on?

I asked for the card at Home Depot today. I asked a floor clerk. He sent me to the customer service station. She sent me to the outdoor center which didn't have any and said to try customer service. I told them I was there already. I went to the regular checkout, they sent me to customer service.... I had plenty of time for the bus so I asked to speak to the store manager. Of course the manager was "at lunch". I wonder how they knew that without even checking. I asked her that question. She said to talk to customer service. While waiting for the bus two clerks were smoking and complaining about not meeting their quotas. Wonder why...As I was waiting for the bus, Three people were bring back dead plants. At least they still take returns.
I would really like to be able to get the discounts. I signed up online for the garden club, but didn't get a card. Hope they mail me one. I got an email link to a garden project page so far...
I wish that your Home Depot was my local one, gita. Ours is terrible. The roses that looked so beautiful on Thursday are near dead now for lack of watering. The tomatoes and peppers are over watered to the point that the coir pots are disintegrated and crumbling all over. Hostas were marked as full sun. The leaves were broken and wilting. You have to get lucky and get freshly stocked plants because the local store staff doesn't care for them properly.
If I am still angry about it tomorrow, I will make a complaint on the main web page or write the ceo a letter.
GardenQuilts, as far as I know, there isn't an actual card for HD garden club.
After you sign up online, you'll start receiving the coupons in your email. You have to click on the ad to open up a printable version of the coupon.
I get weekly emails from HD, and Garden Club coupons are included in about half (or more?) of the emails.
GQ--
Sorry you got the run-around.....Which HD is yours?
At the bottom of every receipt--there is a phone number you can call

It is called VOC--Voice of the Customer. Believe me--your opinion will count.
next tome look on all the aprons and write down their names...then you can get more personal.
Maybe one day you could come my way--our HD is called White Marsh HD. #2502.
Our phone # is: 410-78-9200.
I will wait on you personally! I work Tues. Wed. and all day Sunday.
Gita
Oh GQ, personal shopper assistance! You couldn't get any better than Gita, that's for sure!! =)
Gita, personal gardening guide and shopper, sounds good to me.
I spent almost all day yesterday in the veggie garden, and hope to do the same today. I did pick-up a load of mulch yesterday, that I need to work on if I have enough Preen to put down first. I'm still behind in the garden but the cooler temps have checked growth on what is planted. 45*F here again last night.
The same thing was happening with my Tuberous Begonia Bulbs, Gita. Three were showing and 2 weren't. They were all treated the same way under lights. When I dumped the 2 that weren't showing, the bulbs seemed mushy!! Can't figure out why the other ones got the same treatment and are thriving.
I spent yesterday on the couch barely getting up have this head congestion, sore throat, with chills thing going on. So this morning I walked out with Ric to see what he did yesterday. He was working in the Veggie garden all day long and boy did he get a lot done. Veggie Garden is looking really good.
Boo, I hope you are feeling better Holly
Gita, next time I move, I am moving to your neighborhood! I am waiting for those beautiful yellow peonies to go on sale. Maybe on Memorial Day weekend. If you hear that they are on sale and are allowed to let me know, please do.
I was super grumpy yesterday. I have been having plumbing troubles in my new place. They pumped my septic yesterday while I was out. I should have picked up some drano because the kitchen sink is still clogged. (I typically use baking soda and vinegar, but that isn't helping). It is a double sink, so I was tandem plunging with 2 plungers. I just want to my kitchen gear set up, but I like to wash it as I unpack it.
I go to the Stroudsburg #4127 Home Depot. There are other stores less than 20 miles away, but a bit further and less convenient. The Stroudsburg Home Depot is in a complex with Target, BJ and TJ Max so I can get a bunch of shopping done with one ride on the bus. I didn't get any email coupons yet.
Lowes has places across from the Giant supermarket and next to the much nicer Mount Pocono Walmart. One finds places to feed their plant addiction.
I still managed to buy plants yesterday. I got a Chicago peace rose from a shelf of newly stocked roses. Its buds looked like the pretty yellow peony buds. I also got a gardenia to keep inside in my new "florida office" - combo desk and plant room in my new place. I was waiting for them to go on sale, but there weren't many left. I also got two baby tomatoes - Celebrity and San Marzano. I am still looking for "lightbulb" aka yellow pear tomato and coral baby petunias (callibracio however you spell it). I want to combine tiny coral petunias and regular dark purple petunias in a pot for my front garden. The purple petunias are doing well on their own if I don't find them.
I would love to be outside gardening, but I have to check up on my test knitters and unclog my kitchen sink.
Oops, I missed your posts. Hope you start feeling better, Holly. You are lucky to have such a wonderful husband (he is lucky too, of course).
I met a couple in the new neighborhood who had been together over 50 years. Sunday (May 18) was the anniversary of their first date in 1958. The wife's friend said that they wouldn't last 6 months. I wonder if they are still friends.
