My son scooped this out of the pool and it stung him. Does anyone know what it is? Thank you for answers in advance.

Following up on Flapdoodle's answer, your Backswimmer is Notonecta indica:

We have a page for that species in BugFiles here: http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/2977/
and we would be pleased if you would add your image to that page,
Ken
