Somthing stung me :(

Birmingham, United Kingdom

Hi im a newbie here. Hoping someone can shed light on what is stinging me. I have about 6 around 1/4 inch dia...very red very itchy...weeps yellow poison, lasts around a week before they stop itching then leave scars (thats the damage to me)...everytime i get stung there seems to be a fly thing around. Bit like a crane fly but not so feroucious looking...legs are smaller, wings smaller. Looks like a neat and tidy dragon/crane fly. Light beige colour. Overall this little beast measures appx 1.5 inches long. They hang around the windows when the light is on but they are not mosquitoes etc as they are bigger. Ive looked on internet but can only find crane flys and they dont sting or bite, but whatever this is, it packs a powerful punch!! Anyone help please?

Might be an ichneumon wasp in the subfamily Ophioninae - see http://insects.net46.net/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=1822&g2_serialNumber=2 for an example. Although these wasps lack true venom, their sting can be quite painful as I can personally attest...

Hi Flapdoodle. It wasnt quite like that one, it very much resembled a crane fly but looked less harmful. I wasnt able to get a picture of it, but if another one comes in i will take his mugshot and post on here :D Bites/sting has finally stopped itching after a week, but have scars left now :( My daughter was touched on the leg by one of these things about 3 yrs ago, she was sitting on sofa and started to say her leg hurt, then within 5 mins her whole leg had gone bright red rash, there was a spot but i think she must have had allergic reaction to whatever it was. looked around and found one dead on floor next to her (think she trod on it in sheer panic). Shes very nervous since. They seem to hang around windows and doors (like craneflys) i see if i can get a pic of one x

Do you see/feel them exactly when biting/ stinging? We want to ID the guilty party, not some bug that was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The bites sound like fire ant bites - I hope they haven't found their way to the UK!
