I assume this tree's splendor will get better with time, but I'm rusty with my tree flowers; what is it?
Pathetic Flowering Tree
Magnolia.

I hope it has more to offer than what it's showing. :)
What kind of Magnolia is the most common around here on people's lawns? Is it Southern or are we too cold for that?
I don't know what is the most common magnolia in MA, but I'd guess the one in photo is a Loebner type.
Southern Magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora) is a large leafed evergreen species. If the trees you see commonly in Massachusetts are deciduous, then they are not Southern Magnolia.
Star Magnolia will be pretty common for your territory. It is most commonly a many-petaled white flowered type, but there are some pale pink clones. Saucer Magnolia is also planted quite often; pink/white large saucer-shaped flowers are its hallmark.
Loebner selections are great intermediate forms which are a hybrid species.
There are so many types of Magnolia, it will make your head spin as you look into it. Providing images of whtat you find common would make the question easier to answer.
That tree is definitely not a Southern Magnolia.
Thanks everyone. :)
