Winecup is Callirhoe involucrata:

Tall poppy mallow is C. leiocarpa:

They are easiest distinguished by growth habit. Winecup (C. Involucrata) sprawls low to the ground, whereas Tall poppy mallow (C. Leiocarpa) tends to grow upright. Both grow in close proximity to each other in my fields, making it hard to collect seed..

SPWD-that's what I thought. The plant that everyone around here refers to as Winecups is really Tall Poppy Mallow, an annual. Thank you for clearing that up. I think they are both pretty but I was wondering why my Winecup seeds didn't produce plants that I thought they would. Lol

Lol sounds good to me!

Is the foliage different? I cant tell from the photos.

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

To tell you the truth, if I weren't collecting seed, and just growing it for my own personal enjoyment, I would grow either, or even both together for a thicker mat of color. The flowers are virtually identical. Buuutt, since I like to collect and share seed, I am very particular about labeling correctly.

LOL Baja!!

Steadycam, looks like they both have a geranium type leaf, but the Tall poppy mallow (C. Leiocarpa) leaf is divided more deeply, whereas the wincup is lobed.

Thanks SPWD. I think I have probably not seen the poppy mallow. I have the wine cups one.

Ramped up. My winecups wild were always single 1day long flowers, not that mass of magenta. Got one picture as a flyby in Ga- these states have scalped their barditches and the hwy median was all that was left. This is not a hwy to be crossing the road in front of oncoming traffic.Determined to get better pix.

More blue flowers than bluets, blue eyed grass will be that asian dayflower down low to the ground, Atlanta at dusk as I dropped south

I don't know. I only sowed Winecups once bc the seeds were so expensive, I don't know if any grew, i don't remember seeing them. They weren't invasive here. I have sowed Tall Poppy Mallow but the only ones I've seen are in fields and I haven't seen any here this season.

1lisa?- winecups native? Grow best flung wide near old burn scars and R E A L L Y crappy soil...

(Becky), Lipan, TX(Zone 7b)

Kitt is right, I probably have the crappiest soil (dare I even call it soil, it really is just dirt, dust) of all, and they come back reliably every year. Thought they were perennial but maybe just a self sowing annual. Either way, I just love them, and Lisa, if I end up with extra seed, I'll send you some :)

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Ok. when I get to move again i will snap shots. Think that flyby pic is of Malvaceae Callirhoe 'alceoides' and a mallow, but white not rose. I am as fond of the pastel colors as some folx hate for them, chuckl. I do have to figure out how to mute their extreme reflectivity into the ultraviolet range so I can get a softer picture tho.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

I was talking abt the foliage...as I THOUGHT I liked and wanted Winecups but what I real like and want is the Tall Poppy Mallow. I have about a 1/4 inch of dust on rocks, for soil. The correct name isn't that important except when your ordering seeds. I spent a lot of $ on Winecup seeds but I really wanted Tall Poppy Mallow.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Wildseed Farms sells Showy Primrose and it is prob goin to be what is showing up in the hwy medians. Oenathera speciosa,

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

SPWD-true Winecups are perennial, Tall Poppy Mallow are annuals. Sure, if you have extra seeds I'd love some. Kitt-I don't understand what you mean regarding them being native or not, I must have missed something.

Dallas, TX

I was at North Haven Gardens today strolling around when suddenly something caught my eye. It was bright. It was magenta. And the label said it was a winecup. Sorry that I wasn't able to write down the scientific name. Next time.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Carrie was wondering originally what flowers she was seeing in a vacant lot, not sure if they would be native or not, but I was trying to find names of certain colored plants I qknow to be hiding in the grasses. I also know that Wildseed Farms raises a LOT of the wildflower mixes the states seed the highways with. That began a discussion of us locating a primrose/mallow that WASN'T winecup magenta. chuckl. I couldnt find clarification of what I wanted in the DG files.Took me a little time to chase down what I could see in my mind.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I got pix of what I've been seeing, but they're horrible pictures and they're stuck on my phone, If I remember how to upload them from my phone (do I send them to myself and savwe them from email?) then I'll post them here for review by this committee. ^_^

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

We will! Chuckl. The whites(pinks) DONT photograph without a fight...

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Sounds like it could be Plains Poppy Mallow.
