FIRST FLOWERS OF SPRING Frost..What the??

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I think we will be driving through Saskatoon on our way to Alaska. Don't you just love to say that word?

Vienna, VA(Zone 7a)

Thanks for i.d.'ing Terp's "hmmm" plant, Sally; I was wondering what it was.

I like that serviceberry! Does it grow in shrub or tree form? Any idea how quickly it grows?

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

LOL..Saskatoon is fun to say :)

Gita, do your Forget-Me-Nots spread their way about the garden on their own? I bought a pink one two years ago and it politely spreads it way through the garden making more and more clones. It's pretty crazy because a lot of them are 6' or so from the original. It's real sporadic too. I'll take a pic once it blooms...it's setting buds right now so maybe in a week or so. I just bought a blue one and I hope that one spreads like the pink one.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Saskatoon is fun.
I cannot say Albuquerque, without thinking of Bugs Bunny. and thinking of it the way he says it.

How about Yosemite? When I was a teenager, we went there on a cross country camping trip. I had always pronounced it with two syllables - imagine my surprise when I found out it is actually pronounced with four syllables! I guess I had never even seen the cartoons as a kid with Yosemite Sam :)

Still very few blooms here - pulmonaria is blooming now, weeks and weeks behind what everyone else has reported. Sequoia, I love those forget-me-nots but haven't planted any here yet. Need to remember to put those on the "to get" list. One of my favorite gardening books is "Tasha Tudor's Gardens". Look at the self seeding forget-me-nots there:

Jeff--
F-M-N's do spread--but only close by to the original plants.
I don't think the seeds "fly" all over the place. As far as I know....

The seeds are miniscule--so hard to collect....but the babies that come up
can be easily moved.

I love them--but then they bloom out and get junky and then I hate them.
Just gathering the dead stems will spread a million seeds..

Usually--I believe--it is recommended that FMN's be sown among spring blooming bulbs.

Terri--
I would never spend money to buy FMN's!
Enough people must have them....I need to look and see if I have any seedlings..
Sometimes I dig up my beds and then the seeds get buried...

Pic #3 is a daff from Gita, the one with the salmon-tinted trumpet.
Pic #5 is my Lonicera sempervirens setting sweet little buds. Hopefully the aphids will stay away.

Yoes- might? haha

Ooh, nice job with the off center Poeticus, typ

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Beautiful photos, Typ! The salmon-trumpet daff is especially pretty. And I love your Leucojum! Mine never came up--my one bulb failure from the fall planting. :-( I'm not sure what happened.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Typwc, I have those daffs, too. They are a favorite of mine.
Reticulated Iris, Forget M Not, Johnny Jump Ups, Dutchmans Britches, Pulmonaria

Typ: I believe that is a Salome daffodil. It looks much like the ones blooming in our yard right now.

Gita: I am thrilled with the success of my FMN's! When I planted it and it started moving about, I thought it was a weed but curiosity got the better of me and I left it go; glad I did :) I just hope the blue one does the same. I guess it will if it's happy. I planted a blue one last spring but it promptly died where I had it; perhaps it had too much shade. I think the foliage is pretty after the bloom is over.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Ditto Salome. I bought Cpree Elizabeth from the big bulb buy, and it seems to be a close cousin, doing that color change trumpet thing.

Seq, not sure which FMN you mean. I agree that Brunnera are nice foliage after bloom, getting big and round. I agree with Git, the common wild ones are very cute before and into bloom, and then they stretch out, get thin and turn yellow, and seed like crazy.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Not sure which it is either; all I know is that they are pink and I never remember the foliage looking bad as summer goes on. Either way, whatever is going on is pleasing to me...Lol

I forgot to mention earlier; I was doing one of many garden inspections at my house yesterday and I found what I thought to be grass growing in a bed. I promptly yanked it and low and behold it was a daylily seedling!!! Then I remember the seeds I saved and planted in the fall so I planted it in a pot with potting soil. I went back to that area in the bed and found another that was growing also. I was so excited :) I've never had daylily volunteers before!

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

what does FMN stand for?

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Forget-Me-Not.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Sorry to correct you all--but the Daffs I have shared with so many of you
are NOT "Salome". Salome's trumpets are pink. Mine are butterscot-yellow.

Salome. http://www.brecks.com/product/Salome_Daffodil

I don't know the name of mine--but i dug clear an area of them and shared the bulbs
last year. I still have them around my KK Hibiscus bed....

Here--mine-- They ARE different....

well they are pretty whatever they are called! :-)

I just saw shoots from both my hibiscus! yay!! I was worried about them. I also saw what look like shoots from my Solomon's Seal, which I had given up for dead last summer!

My dogwood blossoms are finally open... and the azaleas are almost ready to pop, too!

I dunno, Gita. I didn't name the ones you gave me as Salome because I know we've all had this debate before, but this might be one those agree-to-disagree things. Catalog pictures are wildly variable. Look at another site selling them: http://www.longfield-gardens.com/plantname/Narcissus-Salome Very much like what you and I have.

Gorgeous, Catmint. Dogwoods flowering give me such a feeling of home...

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Typ! :-)

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Hmm...I don't know Gita, those catalog pics from Brecks look nothing like my Salome. Mine look exactly like the ones Typ pictured. But like Typ said, I agree to disagree :)

Holly: Your second picture post, third picture, are those Geranium Daffs? Very beautiful, they look like the ones I have coming out right now. They may be picture ready by the time I get home from work today. I had no idea they had so many blooms per stem. Mine look to have about 4-5 blooms per stem! Bonus flowers :)

Chevy Chase, MD(Zone 7a)

Gita gave me a fantastic pot of ForgetMeNots last spring swap, and I planted them in a very prominent location -- and then forgot I had done that (pun intentional) and mulched over the whole bed. Now no sign of them -- I'm very sad.

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Oh man...you're not supposed to forget them!...Lol

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Catmint, I love your dogwood!

Holly, that light blue ret. iris is gorgeous. What a beautiful color.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

thanks, SSG! :-)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Catmint, I haven't seen my leucojum yet either... I think they may be a late spring bloomer, like the big alliums, so don't give up on them yet!

ed. to add.. Photos make the foliage look pretty "grassy" on teh leucojum, so don't pull them by mistake (that's how my FIL lost the grape hyacinths I planted, LOL).

I am not sure if they are Geranium Daffs, I would say either those or something very much like that. They are fragrant, Multi-flowering small daffs only 2in wide. Here is a closer look and a few extra pics.

SSG, I added that ret. iris to my haves list would you like one?

They look like Geranium Daffs. I'll have to check mine when I get home. Are those Thalia Daffs in pic 2?

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Looks like it to me, I should post pictures of all my daff and see how many you can ID for me. LOL

Lititz, PA(Zone 6b)

Haha...really I'm not that good. It only happens that you pictured ones that I also have :)

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks Critter! :-)

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Yes, Holly, thank you!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Hey! I am willing to accept that there are 2 kinds of "Salome" daffs.

In my gardening years--I had only come across the pink ones....
so Assumed that the ones I have were NOT "Salome"...

Very narrow-minded of me.....Thanks--Now I have the name of the ones
I have and gave away last year....
I still don't know where I got mine......

Holly and others---
I know I have newly growing Forget-me-Nots scattered here and there.
I will dig some up.

Another option is to buy a packet of seeds ($1.29) and scatter them here and there
in late spring. They will come up and you will have them next year.

G. love the forget me knots!! we haven't had many lately... need to plant more seeds like you suggested. A while back, we had the taller type too and I really liked those.

Harry and I worked out in the yard and veggie garden today. So much to do. Lots of weeds in the garden. Harry replaced a rotten piece of wood from one of the raised beds too. Looked like termite damage. It was supposedly treated wood.

I took a few pics today: the iris was from the swap last year - just started blooming - not real tall - I like it. The phlox is also short and was from the swap. Cowslip is the yellow bloom. I was happy to spot that today.

Such pretty forget me nots, Gita! I have some seeds for this spring and planted them in a relatively shady spot. I hope they come up!

I actually saw the first germination today from all the seeds I planted last weekend--the pot marigold is sprouting! :-) Hopefully others will follow soon.

I also just got my Magnolia Jane bare roots 'stick' today from the Arbor Day Foundation! I have the roots soaking in water right now before putting into a large pot for leafing out. Exciting! My baby crape myrtle from last year seems to be still alive though slow breaking dormancy... I wonder if it needs less sun?

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Wind, Did you give me Yellow Trillium last year? It is just about ready to bloom.

Silver Spring, MD(Zone 7a)

I don't know why I don't grow any forget me nots. I love blue flowers but don't have enough of them. I'm just loving all the brunnera blooms. I'd love all pink, blue, and purple flowers, but it's too late to color-coordinate at this point!

Catmint, my crape myrtle is just barely breaking dormancy. And the regular Joe Pye Weed just poked through today.

Magnolia 'Jane' is the one that I'd love to have. I have no idea where I'd plant it, but I really want it!
