Friend or Foe? Ladybug-ish insect on pepper plant

We are growing hot Thai chili peppers from seed. This visitor dropped by. The coloring is somewhat like a ladybug, but the body is more elongated. Any ideas whether this is friend or foe?

Might be either an ant-like flower beetle or a soft-winged flower beetle. In any case, it does not appear to be a pest species.
