Yeah I saw the same thing on one of our crape myrtles. I just planted it last fall and I think a portion of it died. I'll have to wait and see. I remember when planting it that it had a really solid root system on it so hopefully it will live.
GT: we have some spring bloomers but nothing out of them yet.
FIRST FLOWERS OF SPRING!!! Post your pics!! April Edition :)
Very nice collection, Greenthumb!
Gita, All of my hydrangeas died back to the ground too. I was lamenting that somewhere in some thread. I'm thinking I won't have any blooms this year on the mopheads. :( But I think that the lacecap blooms on new growth so hopefully I'll have that at least.
Finally have some Daffs blooming. I find the first one pictured is a rather ugly flower. Second one much prettier. All of my daffs are unknown varieties, as they were planted before I bought the house.
David, beautiful plants emerging! Thanks for posting the photos.
Typ, I can't say for certain, but the first daffodil is a Division 11a collar type - possibly 'Cassata'. The second daffodil is a Division 2 large cup type - possibly 'Ice Follies', which has that distinctive ruffled trumpet and is very common in home gardens.
In the small, round bed that used to hold a Birch Tree--now only
holds my BIG pot that I plant full of stuff on top of the precarious remains
of what used to be the Birch stump.
You know how I give my beds names.....this one is called the "stump bed".
It is, maybe, 5'-6' in Diam.
Around the crumbling stump grows my spreading Euphorbia (not up yet)
but all around it I have these old, who-knows-what-kind of daffodils.
Some call them the "old fashioned ones"---some call them the "Heirloom ones'.
They are interesting....no shape or form to the blooms. Kind of....shredded....
I remember when we first moved in this house (1969), I saw them occasionally in the woods...
as if someone had dumped them there and they were growing...accidentally.....
I also know that I dug up a few of them and had them in my garden.
Don't know where or when??? But--it is possible that these may be their progeny.
They are blooming now--but i did not go outside to take pictures...these are from 2013.
I gave Terp some of these last year (?) or the year before...How are they doing, Paul??
Donner, that's terrible...looks like you'll have to plant something that's not squirrel dessert!
Greenthumb, thanks for the photos! It's neat to see which natives are surfacing now.
Very pretty daffodils, Gita!
Aspen, thanks! That's great to know!
Very cool daffs, Gita.
I haven't seen them yet. I'll keep an eye out!
Hahaha....Gita I'm glad I'm not the only one who names the garden beds!
greenthumb, you and ecnalg have a lovely early woodland garden!
I was likewise raking off the remains of fall leaves from an area with woodland type plants. I found today both Dicentras had emerged (pink, white), oh joy! I have two 'gingers' I still forget which is which but one is showing new leaves among the tattered last year's, and the other is suddenly showing its thick creeping stems on the soil surface and fat buds about to open up into leaves. Oh there is some Neomarica walking iris surviving after all! Brunnera and spiderworts are showing. Buckeye buds are opening up with the five-pointed leaves folded they look like little cupped hands with fingers all pointing up. I tried to be grumpy about the cold, but I couldn't be, with all this new life!
haha Seq. I half-joked I need to name one bed "David" because of the source of the many woodland plants there.
I try to make my bed names easy so my wife knows which I'm talking about...LOL
I *love* trilliums! Mine isn't even close to blooming yet but I'll post pics once it does.
Seq, that's actually a good idea! I have one called the Death Bed since everything there dies, but none of the other beds have names. I need to start thinking of names!
Sally, the 'ginger' showing new leaves among the tattered last year's leaves is your Hexastylis, which is more or less evergreen. Asarum 'ginger' is deciduous and dies to the ground in the winter.
I tend to have boring names for mine--e.g., 'Front Porch Bed', 'Rose Bush Bed', 'L-shaped bed,' 'Square Bed', etc. Guess I need to work on more creative names!! :-)
I have Cottage Garden, Hillside Shade Garden, Turtle Garden, Daffodil Trail, but then the others are pretty standard Front Foundation Beds, Front Steps Beds, Front Island Beds, Turret Foundation Beds, Stepping Stone Beds, and Side Yard.
Cat, mine aren't very interesting, they mainly are functional.
Eastside garden, Large shrub garden, Perennial wildflower garden, Honeylocust garden, etc...I like the KISS method for naming things...Keep It Simple Stupid...LOL
Mine are simple enough--like everyone else s--they, kind of, describe their
geographical locations.
small front bed.....KK (Hibiscus) bed....small kitchen side bed......kitchen side bed......
WS bed.....stump bed......shed bed....A/C bed......raised bed....Yuk bed......long side bed.....
That's all of them!
I am, at least, hoping that if I talk long enough about my garden and beds--
most people here will know which one i am talking about.....especiaally
if they have been here.
G.
Thanks David, I will make labels today. They are alphabetical from the path as I look, so I can remember that.
Death Bed..hahaha!
I have a death zone but never formally named it. I've struggled to find things that live there.
my Shade Bed is now sunny! I have to retrain my thinking, that's now a potential location for a rose, and the hosta need to be extracted. Here's a lovely name, my Driveway Bed.
Sally--
I think "Zombie Zone" would be a good name for your back corner....
it's pretty easy for me since I'm in an inside-unit townhouse: there's the front yard and the back yard. ;) Although I guess I could get fancy with the backyard.
Catmint, you could look up famous botanists, horticulturists, or landscape architects and name your beds after them. Or presidents. Or celebrities. Or letters of the alphabet. The options are endless.... :)
"Oh and this is my Grover Cleveland Bed. See how there are actually two beds and they are not joined? Just like how he served two terms but not consecutively."
"There's my Franklin Pierce Bed. To be honest, it's my least favorite bed out of all of them."
"My Ronald Reagen bed: consisting mostly of slow-growing perennials I purchased online tax-free."

hahahatypwc!
Hm Gita, that is now my Wintersweet Bed!
I could name all the beds by their most prominent member. Buckeye Bed (nice alliteration) Birdhouse Bed (ditto) Maple Madness (four maples form a shady corner, obviously I did not choose three of them) Welcome Home ( much better than Driveway!) Keeping Up with the Joneses ( everything in front is generally a bit neater and more conventional)
I took a few pictures yesterday but must have been the wrong setting so I'm not bothering to share.
typ, ha ha ha, pretty clever.
Sally, good names, my fav so far is Maple Madness.
Karen hilarious!!!
Love the names you two came up with, and the excellent reasoning for them. Good way to start the day!
Since the house has 10 sides, beds tend to be referenced that way, such as the bed off Sara's room.
Nice Typ! Your presidential knowledge is impressive :) I wonder what type of plants would be in the Bill Clinton bed?
Seq: Challenge accepted.
"While it's not my personal favorite, most of my visitors really enjoy the The Bill Clinton Bed. It's a relatively young bed. There's the Peach tree centerpiece, underplanted with Schizostylis coccinea 'Jennifer'. And you can see that the container planting of Mentha 'Hillary's Sweet Lemon' is basking in the sunshine in the front, practically stealing the show."

Ha ha - it also contains daylily 'Monica Dream'...
Aspen: YESSSSS!
hehehehehehe hehehehehe I'm going to be giggling about this all day. So glad that I have you guys who get my jokes.
Seq: I actually learned a lot about presidents this morning. I looked up a few random presidents on wikipedia and that's just what I came up with in a short amount of time.
LOL ROFL!!!!
Coccinea.....say it a few times...perfect for Clinton!! Good Job Typ!
I love it! Karen, that's actually much classier than where I would have gone with it! :)
I like Bill and Hillary and perhaps I will name a bed in honor of them! :-) great idea TYP!
Great addition, Terri.
We're considering a Putin bed, with our Russian olive and other invasives.
I'm considering the Obama vegetable garden...all my neighbors will come take out of it and hopefully I'll have enough for my family ;P
Very nice Ecnalg!....and other invasives LOL
I'll plant a duncecap flower for my GW Bush bed. And for my Reagan bed I'll need a flower that hogs the majority of the organic riches for the top 2% elite among plants.
I LOVE the Putin bed idea!
I need a Kim Jong Un bed where the transgressor and the next 3 generations are exiled.
LOL on the Putin and Kim Jong Un beds.
Haaa.Haaa...Pat---
AND--what do you plan to put in---in the Putin bed? ...:o)
Whoever makes the Bill Clinton bed--make sure you plant things in it
that will go "blowing in the wind".......It would be more meaningful if this bed
could be in Egypt. I hear Bill has always been fond of "de-Nile"....
...snort.....G.
