Ahh...I understand SSG. My Raspberry Wine never flops. It's got a really strong stalk and they are just starting to bloom. I'm excited to share pics when it gets going.
Mid-Atlantic Bird Watching - Spring 2014, Cont'd
I once had a wren build a nest in a drawer of bolts that was left pulled out of my organizer in the barn. The fledglings left and I took the nest out and closed the drawer. LOL
I .looked in my little Audubon Bird book--and there was NO picture of the
Carolina Wren--just the "House Wren'--
SO--I suppose my denizen in my flower pot is the House Wren.
Still there....
G.
Wow that's a gorgeous pic of that egret and other bird.
thanks, Seq! She has a website for her photography http://bescoles.zenfolio.com/ which unfortunately seems to be down at the moment--she may be working on it. Her father and my mother were siblings (her father died a few years ago). We must have both gotten our love for nature from our grandmother, who always kept a beautiful garden. We have another cousin who also does nature photography--her name is Judy Ann Martin (same relationship--her father and my mother were siblings).
Below are 3 of Judy's photos (she has begun experimenting with mixing her photos with some kind of computer art to make a 'painted' effect) and two more of Barbara's.
Well, I really enjoy their photos.
Wow, that third image is breathtaking! #4 is so cute. I'd love to see them in action when they get on their momma's back.
thanks, Seq! :-) I think their place in Oregon is fairly large with natural water that attracts the birds. She did a whole series of mom/baby bird photos in water this spring.
well, wish I could attract more birds, too... Maybe someday I can live in a more rural setting!
Rural = Deer eating plants
It would be nice to go on vacation in a place like that though.
Jeff, Ya' just gatta' start eating the deer! Makes them stay away pretty good. LOL
Robin, excellent pics!
The reason I checked in is to remind anyone with lettuce bolting, leave some in. You will be graced be finches, they absolutely love it.
LOL Ric--mm, roast venison...
No lettuce here, but my lone tomato and watermelon plants are getting bigger. Another strawberry to harvest. Hoping to keep the cuke plant going. Ah, the farm life... ;-)
WOW Those pics are just stunning.
Bird in the pic with the Egret is a Red Wing Black Bird.
Ric, I had no idea that finches liked lettuce seeds. I'm letting one red and one green lettuce bolt to save the seeds, but I would have let more of them bolt if I'd known! Strangely, the green one isn't bolting yet, and it's in full sun in my very hot backyard. My backyard is certainly sizzling I can feel the temperature difference when I walk through the gate.
Catmint, your cousin's so talented! Such gorgeous pictures.
thanks, everyone! I'm pretty proud of them, too! :-) I'll try to capture their photos from time to time when they post them to FB.
I don't recognize that flower either. That's a nice treatment though. She knows when to stop short of the colors getting too weird. The chicks are precious!
Yesterday--on our trip to Warrenton, VA for the "Christmas in June" picnic
with my cousins and all their generations of progeny--Wally--the elder cousin--
walked over to his Bluebird House--and opened one side of it, as it was just held
together with a latch hook, to expose a big nest.
He had a small mirror on a handle that he inserted into the top of the house,
and it showed a couple (?) freshly hatched babies. They were so tiny--and totally naked.
They must have hatched just that day.
After a while--he said--"Look! There comes the mother to feed them"...
She stuck her body into the hole--with the tail end still outside--and my Cousin said--
"She is feeding the babies--she regurgitates any food she has eaten to gently feed
the newborns.
How amazing! I never knew birds do that........
They also had a red-shouldered hawk flying over the tree-tops and screeching at us all.
as she had a nest in one of the tall Oaks surrounding their back property.
I saw it fly over us several times. What a beautiful bird!!!
G.
Sounds like a wonderful day, Gita! Very cool about the bird's nest and new hatchlings.
Haha Ric....I guess that would work. Either that or if you took what I wrote the other way around, you could plant deer eating plants...LOL
I think my Wren flew the coop---gave up on me messing with the flowers in the pot.
I dead-headed some of the spent bloom clusters of the Heliatrope in this pot--
and, I think, it took away the "cover" to the nest--so it is now abandoned.
I already noticed yesterday--as i was gently watering this big pot--that the bird
did not flee as usual...
Will give it a couple more days--and then remove the pile of "stuff" the nest was
made of anf reclaim my BIG pot.

Just about time for a new thread?

Catmint, would you please, with maybe that cute quail chick standing on the rock? I tried but it didn't save to me computer. VaWildRose must be busy, with her beautiful daughters, hunky husband, and all those Streps and birds of her own.
LOL Sally! Hunky husband huh? Guess I wouldn't have much time either! ;-). Sure I'll do it this evening once I'm back at my home computer. The little lone baby quail is a great choice!
Hunky husband...LOL
Last night Darcy and I went for ice cream and we sat out by the creek next to the shop. There will little baby ducks trying to swim and it was so cute to watch them try to swim against the current. They were trying to steer as they were swimming with the current too and it was hard for them....sooo cute!
oooo ducklings...sooooo cute!!!!!!
